Is shaman a bad choice for starting out?

    How's the late/endgame with shaman?

Also, how good are the perks of ranks? Is hero rank needed or no?

Shaman is the worst choice for new players. It has very low defense and the spells are pretty hard to learn. If you're new I suggest playing archer or mage (archer does crazy damage, mage can heal themselves and teleport away from danger).

I haven't reached late game with shaman so idk how viable it is then.

Perks do nothing for your gameplay because of EULA, instead giving you more class slots, reskins for classes (stats are exactly the same), daily crates with cosmetics and the ability to fly in the lobby.

If you’re planning on doing it solo, I would suggest mage or assassin because they both do good damage and have solid defence (and mage can heal). Shaman and archer have very low defence and warrior doesn’t really do that much damage.

    shaman rant time

ok I don't have the time for that

So basically, Shaman can be a bad choice to start with because of it requiring spell combos to do 80% of what it does. It also has a really low base defense, and the playstyle focuses on player position.

The thing about Shaman though is that its main damage spell, Aura, is ridiculously overpowered and playing with it can get boring due to that.

The only gameplay advantages of ranks are more class slots, more market slots, and short-duration mob totems which boost mob spawn rates. You do not need a rank to play the game properly, only very minor QoL features and cosmetic features are locked behind them.

For a playthrough you can use any class you want, Mage is good for beginners, but you should use whatever fits your playstyle the best.

Honestly, if shaman looks cool to you, try it
That being said, my friend who’s relatively new to wynncraft just started a shaman playthrough and he’s having a hard time of it because he has to keep in mind spell combos and stuff

Really the recommended starting class should definitely be mage because of heal spell and survivability. But again, if you like the idea of shaman, go ahead :)
(And don’t listen to them, warrior might suck, but it’s fun (honestly wouldn’t recommend for a first playthrough though, lol))

i would honestly disagree with lots of the people above. starting off with shaman is completely fine. yes, it has a low base defense but high crowd control and high damage. maybe that's,,,, appealing to them? after all, why would you force someone into playing a close range high damage class when they want to play a crowd control glassy class? Playing a class that's slightly different from the others at the start makes practically no difference than playing the other.

shaman endgame is pretty solid, you'll get lots of support spells like totem heal and totem damage buff along with pretty good damage. the weapons are also just so much cooler
you also have lots of build choices, so if you want to be a tanky shaman, yep that exists, same goes for a hyperglass shaman

the only part i can see the people above talking is the spammability of aura. Chances are at endgame that you're going to be spamming one spell, aura, with another spell inserted between like uproot (for the conventional spellspam build). So if you don't like that, shaman might not be the class for you (although you can also use other build styles like main attack focus shaman which is a little cursed but style points!)

and none of the ranks are needed at all. emogla explained above, but all you're getting are cosmetics and stuff like mob totems.

Shaman is harder to learn than the other classes, but more powerful generally. I'd personally go with mage as my first class, but if you want to play shaman, it's not a terrible idea. If it becomes too much of a challenge or if you don't enjoy it, you can always start another class.

As for a rank, the perks are nice, but they mainly benefit older players (the biggest thing being more class slots). They're all EULA compliant, so they don't give any ingame advantage, just some neat visual perks, more class slots and a few more slots in the trade market (actually, that one's kind of debatable). I played for like five years before winning my rank in a giveaway, and, while the perks are really nice, it never felt like I needed to buy a rank to have fun.

Basic oversimplification of all the classes:

    Assassin:
Dps, and lots of blinding effects
    Close quarters
(If I’m not mistaken it can actually out damage archer)

    Archer:
    Fast/hard to hit boi
    Can do very good damage
    Ranged

    Warrior:
    Tanky boi
Lackluster damage (unless compared to mage)
Basically a passive 34% damage reduction even without defensive skill points.
Arguably worst spells (absolutely no range)
    (My personal favorite ;)

    Mage:
Healer (absolutely amazing for leveling since you don’t have to rely on health potions, same for shaman)
Meteor does tons of damage but takes a second to fall, limiting dps
Moderate crowd control with ice snake and blinds on teleports
Very balanced between survivability and damage

    Shaman:
    Crowd control dps and support
    Tons of crowd control
    Tons of damage
Decent healing. More consistent than mage (but is not a burst heal like mage, so you can end up stuck trying to heal in your totem aura)
    Not tons of tanky though.
I always felt OP on my shaman playthrough
    Annoying movement spell.
    GREAT for grinding and support
