So I’ve decided to do a series of threads about how to be a “good” theorist. Let me make it clear from the outset, I’m not the best theorist out there. I’m no Spyrohawk or anything like that. But I do have a bit of experience and am probably one of the few in-depth theorists in the community. Let’s get started in today’s thread: how does one become a theorist?

To answer the question, I want to first say that it’s not simple. Anyone can make a theory, but that doesn’t make them a theorist. Its also not about getting theories that are proven to be right. In all my time as a theorist, I don’t think I’ve ever come up with a correct theory. But that’s the thing, isn’t it? If something is proven right, it isn’t a theory anymore.

No, I would argue that being a theorist isn’t about level, or accuracy, or PvP skill or anything like that. I would argue that to be a theorist you need to meet four criteria:

    1) You need to be able to find out things.

    2) You need to be able to think about those things in a logical manner.

    3) You need to be able to present your findings in an understandable way.

    4) You need to be able to debate your findings with others.

In short, you need to be able to Discover, Evaluate, Present, and Debate, aka DEPD. Lets have a look at three people. Which one is the theorist?

Person A) This person is level 100 and is amazing at writing. They can write a full thesis on anything if they have to.

Person B) This person is level 20. They can think for themselves, and understand other people’s points of view. They can present their findings quite well. However, they suck at PvP and die on the Emerald Trail each day. They have yet to reach Detlas.

Person C) This person is very lucky and finds things all the time. They find cool easter eggs but don’t know how to piece together evidence logically.

Person B is the theorist. They aren’t a good player, but they are a theorist nonetheless. To become a theorist, you need to practice various skills that will help you reach the DEPD criteria.

How to get better at discovering: Travel around Wynncraft. Just look around. As dumb as this sounds, practice being curious. If you see an ordinary cave, investigate. Focus on the details that others might have missed. This is the easiest skill for most people.

How to get better at evaluating: This sounds weird, but do some logic puzzles irl. Get your brain trained so that you can think carefully and yet not take forever. This is is quite hard. Don’t get me wrong, its alright not to be able to explain something. If you payed me a penny every time I’ve been stumped as a theorist, I’d be richer than the entirety of Llevigar. But being at a dead end is different to not being anywhere at all.

How to get better at presenting: Work hard in English classes, if you have them. Learn how to make sentences flow. Everyone’s style is different – some people like me prefer to write the theory as if it is almost a narrative. Some people like to write super scientifically. Both of these are fine, and they both have pros and cons (we’ll address this in a later thread). Also, learn spelling. Sure, it’s ok if you slip up here and there, but get to a good enough standard that its obvious you’ve put a bit of effort in.

How to get better at debating: Learn how to control your emotions. There are times I want to hit my opponents on the head in a debate, but its very important you keep calm. If you don’t you may well start making false claims and your theory will fall to bits.

So now, after a lot of hard work, you’ve finally become a theorist. Well done. Did you think that was a lot of effort? Good, because it’s only gonna get more strenuous from here. Some people think that being a theorist is just finding something cool and writing a short thread with some cool ideas. Those people can say that to the hours and hours I’ve spent fact-checking, testing, and proof reading. Being a theorist is never easy. Its not like riding a bike. Its not that you struggle at first but you get better eventually. Ask 90% of theorists and they will say they are terrible at making theories. The other 10% are either genius or don’t know who they’re kidding.

So, now its time for you to explore. See what you can find. I can guarantee it won’t be easy. There are weeks that go by where I find zilch. But when I do find something I discover, I evaluate, I present, and I debate. That’s the joy of being a theorist.

There will be four more threads in this series, all longer than this one. Each one will be on an aspect of DEPD.

    Happy theorising!

The best theorist is one that always posts about the strange black and white symbols on the map.

    okay, let's do it.

Discovery: Mysterious gate, south of Corkus, with Fruma Guards.
Evaluation: Since the gate has Fruma Guards, the gate must be of Fruma. This would fit with the geographical location of Fruma as well, being west(?) of Ragni.
Presentation: This gate, south of Corkus, must be Fruma. My proof is that it has guards from Fruma, and that the gate would fit with the geographical location of Fruma, being west of Ragni. Since Corkus citizens escaped from Fruma as well, they could have escaped from this gate.
Debate: If you don't agree with me, shut up. You're wrong, and you suck. You're stupid. Don't @ me. Idiot

    And that's ok!

Everyone has their own style and methods. You can't expect one person to be the end-all-be-all of theory-making. Everyone has their own style and ideas!

Also nice to see I'm still relevant.

Thank you. You are completely right that no theorist can do work alone, and we all have different ideas!
Ngl, I'm kind of in awe that you replied. You'll always be relevant, as long as there are theorists around.

Fair point, but I think you are wrong in any way, you also suck at everything and your argument is invalid
