SPOILER Toa "solo" On Ironman Craftsman W/o Crafting (oak Wood Bow, Black Veil, And Abysso Galoshes)

So a few months ago while the server was lagging out and I didn't want to play my hardcore, I thought "hey! what if I made a character the exact opposite" So this horrible concept was created :D

the premise of my challenge was to see how far I could get without upgrading any item, with some small exceptions. This works because on an ironman, you can only use items that you yourself obtained/crafted, and on a craftsman, you can only use items that are crafted - but without leveling a single gathering or crafting skill past level 1, the only possible gear upgrades are items used in quests or powders on items.

also there's no way for anyone to carry you through bosses since you're using ironman mode, so all of this was done solo (and if not, I went back and did it solo) except two floors in Floor 7 of ToA that were impossible to complete and the Death fight itself - big thanks to @Crokee for distracting the other mobs

also, just remembered. I can't actually use potions so I have no form of real healing other than 60ish life steal at level 51, so obviously this lead to a lot of


anyways, like any other person I started out a run of Wynncraft by immediately power leveling to 20 and doing the Grave Digger quest since I didn't want this character to become a carried-through-dungeon simulator even though I could only kill half the mobs in the grave digger spot due to HPR. also they 1shot me



(this was my entire inventory at level 34, btw- still before the ingredient pouch was released, as well as before that screenshot was taken)


the thing that makes this possible is that Oak Wood Bows (archer bc broken dps) have a powder slot! another nifty feature is that you can use them on craftsman characters, since they're the weapon you start with going out of the tutorial. Combine this with the, uh, mechanic where you can drop one, /kill, and get another and powder both of those, I soon had all five elements to exploit weaknesses.

i think one of my best achievements on this character is that I did Stable Story at level, and got my brown horse without unlocking the third Arrow Storm upgrade which made the boss fight majorly easy. I've got a video of one of my attempts somewhere, but unfortunately I died too many times to record every single one

shortly afterward, I decided to camp one gavel tier 4 chest until I got enough powders to get slightly less la croix dps (which I got really really lucky on actually) which is when I found out that you could in fact have multiple oak bows! cool


anyways, a somewhat long time later (a good month of playing it off and on while I leveled my HIC) I eventually got to the level where I could get the Black Veil, which is a pretty cool

. slightly more dps?? no way. the most important thing on this helmet is the mana steal, though, and whoever made the Abysso Gloshes is actually amazing since it's the only way I had enough mana to beat any remotely hard content >.>

anyways eventually I also got to level 60, I finally caved and someone carried me through undergrowth ruins a few times for a level or so since at this point it was an entire afternoon of doing something like this

or having someone totem mobs while I stood on a ledge and shot at them, which is basically the same thing but slower and with more effort. ty to @CrunchyCol for all the totems btw btw

anyways, you might ask, how the fuck do you plan to beat the entirety of ToA with an oak wood bow and a black veil? well let me introduce you to the amazing item that is ABYSSO GALOSHES
unfortunately, they're locked behind the quest Beneath the Depths which is... a hard quest to say the least. it starts in the pirate island and makes you run through a skull maze and do all this shit that would two-shot me at roughly 500 or so hp. now none of this is really an issue because eventually you will get the map and that takes you to an underground cave near Selchar!

the only problem is that the boss has 20,000 hp, and spams heavy push spell which sends you straight into the lava at the edge of the room. also it takes about three to four minutes to get BACK to the boss room after getting two shot. however, there's a small room you can go in at the back to avoid the push spell, and a very specific block you can stand on that prevents the minions from jumping up and hitting you and the boss from arrow storming or push spelling you off the structure.

I did go back after and solo it without the Abysso Galoshes, though, just was super frustrating to not make any progress for over a week so I got help xd

...but seriously though they're like the best boots at level AND I can wear them since Lost Soles requires you to have them?

there are so many things that make this item great. it has a max of 3/4 mana steal, a "lot" of neutral spell damage, but more importantly SEVEN INTELLIGENCE which allows me to get a total of 105 int which would otherwise not be possible, making my spells much cheaper to cast multiple times.

you may be wondering how much damage this build actually does. let me reassure you that it is still completely abysmal. the only reason why I even considered doing ToA is because almost every single mob in the tower has elemental weaknesses and therefore would theoretically be possible to solo, yes?

so I proceeded to get carried through a fuckton of dungeons before I realized that hey, maybe I SHOULD do ToA before I'm level 105.

with this very sound logic and without looking at the stats page for any of the mobs that were actually in ToA,

i decided it would be a fun idea to do it.

Spoiler: Which, you know, wasn’t the worst of ideas

the strategy I used was to empty my entire mana bar into the first mob that spawned when I entered the floor and then quickly /class to avoid instant death, and repeat. However, quickly the mobs started getting too tanky and dealing too much damage to have that still consistently work, especially the ranged ones.

I eventually came up with the strategy of just kiting the melee mobs (with a few exceptions) and then for the ranged mobs, none of them would be able to hit you through the end crystal acting as a Tokenmaster. So when entering the floor I would hide in the end crystal or slightly to the side of it if it was required for the spawns of mobs to target each other (some stages were the same spawns every time) to line up a ranged mob’s spawn, and then wait for the ranged mobs to hit each other. Once one was almost dead I would use arrow bomb and rush out hoping to pick up the token before I died. This works for pretty much all the mobs with a few exceptions up to floor 7, where this no longer works.



The mobs that I really had trouble with were mostly the bosses(duh) and then the rare mob with no elemental weakness. Now these guys were a problem, since it usually takes 30 seconds or so of casting spells to kill them. I mostly forgot what I did for these, but I do remember them all being melee, there were only a couple before floor 7, for one of them I lagged out while classing in and ended up spawning in the floor which for some reason I could hit them through, but not pick up the drops so they despawned when I /classed again lol sad

seeing as I was already a bit over level at 84. especially since I was playing this on the side, just to shoot some mobs for ten minutes or whatever and slowly progress through the tower

as far as the bosses go: oh DEAR god.

Bosses up to Guardian were relatively ez, Guardian is just whittling its HP down until you kill it. Can't trap him at all. Guardian basically only uses charge, but due to its Health Regen and lack of extreme elemental weakness it’s just 20 minutes of having to not mess up once. Chained Beast is pretty much the same thing as Guardian.
Alkevö is a lot more interesting though- you won’t have enough DPS to kill him before he explodes. HOWEVER, after a shitton of just knocking him into random stuff out of frustration, I did notice that there is a specific block you can [redacted] where he can’t escape. in addition to this, if you quickly escape out of aggro range, he'll stop using his self-destruct spell and you can go back a few seconds later and dps him down more.

for the seventh floor, all the melee mobs were easy as usual except for one which had no elemental weakness and thousands of HP. @Crokee helped me through it by aggroing all the mobs except one and then let me arrow storm/shield the mob until it eventually died, and then repeat. Basically the same thing was done with the ranged mobs- the only reason why I couldn’t do this by myself is because for SOME REASON the seventh floor of ToA is designed differently from all the other floors and will kick you out of the crystal for being too close to the exit without having completed it, which leaves your only other option to be blocking projectiles with a horse which is inconsistent at best

Then the few stages in floor 7 where only two or three mobs at a time would spawn, I would [] wait for that one mob to respawn and very slowly kill it until I got all the tokens I needed like in floor 7 level 9

Now, the Death boss fight was something else entirely, and before I go into

Spoiler: three paragraphs of complaining about fighting him

The first thing I tried was just to kill Death without any other pre-planning. Unfortunately, this just isn’t possible. Either the melee mobs spawn first and interrupt my spell cycle too much, which lets Death heal to full eventually, or the ranged ones first and melee soon after. Of course, I can take two hits at the very most using 105 int and 70 dex before I die, but I later changed it to Defense and you’ll see why. I did, however, notice that this was all random. Sometimes it took multiple minutes for the bosses to spawn in and I got amazing luck, though this was very rare. Usually when this happened I would deal about 100k or less damage to him, but the lowest in two months of attempts was 150k/350k HP. I knew it was possible to kill him, though, I just didn’t know quite how.

So, I revisited my idea of sticking mobs in walls. There are these [redacted]. The only problem is that I can’t tank Death’s hits for long enough, so I switched my dex to agi. I tried for a while getting mobs into the wall by spawning my horse in front of me to block some projectiles and then [redacted]. However this is still super inconsistent and I could never get all four melee mobs trapped without death or the mob killing me due to how fragile I was, how difficult it was to get the mob into the wall, and Death just straight up 2tapping me in about a second.

So for a while I shelved this “project” in the back of my head and took a short break from Wynn, but about a month or so after coming back during a profession party I noticed by complete chance that IGNIS’ MAJOR ID EFFECTS IRONMAN CHARACTERS. Now, this is pretty huge. With an Amulet of Rejuvenation, a person just sitting in the room with me could both aggro many of the mobs while giving me infrequent heals to full HP, though of course I would have to walk kinda close to them while not dying in the right time frame. But it was something that I didn’t have before. of course what this changed was like the entire boss fight except for death itself which was still just as capable of killing me as before

So, a few days ago my and my friend decided to go back to Death’s room and try this new method out, except I would use 105 int and 80 defense instead of agility. And it actually worked consistently. The only problem is that my poor friend would have to wait for the mobs to spawn and get everything set up, and then watch me circle around some enemy in a block game for 4 hours without success. Also that fighting Death took close to half an hour per attempt, circle strafing and not messing up my spell cycle pretty much the entire time. Fortunately for me, though, my friend standing in the room with an Ignis left a lot more room for error/to take more risks

In case anybody is wondering or cares, I observed Death to alternate Multihit and Push, then do a lot of Multihits, a lot of Pushes, and then cast a heal spell on himself which healed him for maybe 15-30k hp, which really slowed down the fight.

, im gonna say that it’s truly amazing how lucky all of this is. Arrow Storm deals some fire damage by default, and with an oak wood bow and a water powder death is weak to both of the elements I’m dealing. In addition to this, I have just enough mana steal to be casting spells constantly and not fall below 6 mana, unless I have to re-cast Arrow Shield, giving me a nice safety net.

also I found that the best way to conserve mana and still deal damage is to fire “melee” arrows continuously while also casting arrow storm until it costs either five or six mana. While doing this, I would circle-strafe around him as closely as possible while spamming spells without proc-ing Arrow Shield on him. This is possible because Death has a slight amount of negative kb, which me to pull him perfectly around me while I’m casting arrow storm and not get hit by any of his attacks. doesn't really work with multiple bosses in the arena aggroed on me though sadly

this obviously wasn't done on the first, second, or six hundredth try, i've got a lot of screenshots that were taken after 20 minutes of my life went down the drain to a lagspike, I might try to attach some of the relevant ones in another post or something.

anyways yeah this was pretty fun, idk what I'm going to do with the character now though lol



shame I didn’t record any of this, but I play on a MacBook and get a consistent 2-10 fps while recording my screen, so it really wasn’t possible. Hopefully the screenshots that I have are enough of a visual image, also please don’t ban me for glitch abuse the redacted parts really don't break anything and aren't that bad. thanks I would be quite sad
