i think you can kill him alone but you need a lot of health potions and some of mana potions
and Intelligence potion is really good for the mage because it boost the spell damage

I've tried but I don't have the damage to beat the mage phase, it heals to fast for my dps.

I use a pure, ethereal and, Pheonix wing. My armour is Third eye, Aquarius, Vaward (haven't gotten any leggings that work so these are filler) and, Momento boots
