Hey, you. You're finally awake. You were trying to cross the border, right? Walked right into that Imperial ambush, same as us, and that thief over there.

    Minecraft:
Today in English class we finished reading a “book” called The House on Mango Street. I believe I discussed this briefly a while ago, but I fucking hated it and here’s why.

The “book” (I refuse to call this a real novel, hence the quotes) is about a Latina girl named Esperanza Cordero and her growing up on Mango Street, a low-class neighborhood filled with other Latinos. While this is an okay concept, there is no plot pretty much. See, the “book” is made up of vignettes that usually have no sequence. This “book” breaks every rule of good storytelling. There’s no quotation marks when people are speaking, characters are mentioned before the vignette introducing them comes, etc. By the way...Are you wondering how the characters are? THEY’RE HORRIBLE! EASILY the worst part of the “book”.

Most of the characters in this “book” are one-offs. They’re mentioned once and never again. For example, one vignette is about a boy named Darius. He is described to be slighty air-headed, but one day, he sees a cloud that looks like God. That’s it. He’s mentioned once in the vignette introducing him and never again. While Darius is completely irrelevant, some characters are only introduced to introduce other characters. For instance, a girl named Cathy is introduced, who claims to be the long-lost heir of French royalty. She moves out and Meme Ortiz moves in. His gimmick is that everyone calls him Meme when his real name is Juan. THEN, it’s revealed that Meme’s mom spares their attic to Louie and his cousins. One is named Marin (who’s actually somewhat important to the “plot”), and the other’s name isn’t revealed, but he stole a car and went for a joyride in one vignette. That’s FOUR one-off characters just to introduce one important one!!!

The character’s personalities are insufferable as well. Here’s a list of all relevant characters in the “book”, the ones that contribute something to the “plot”:

    Esperanza (main character)
    Nenny (Esperanza’s sister)
Alicia (Esperanza’s friend, wants to go to univeristy even though she’s oppressed by her father)
    Marin
Lucy and Rachel (Esperanza’s best friends)
Sally (Don’t feel like fully explaining who she is, let’s just say that she’s one of Esperanza’s friends)

Of these, the only ones I can stand are Esperanza and Alicia. The others are your typical “edgy teenage girls who experiment with boys” trope.

I am going to address my other problems with this tumor of a “book” at a later date, but I’ve run out of brainpower for now. I need to sleep
