Ionian and Aeolian are basically the major scale and the natural minor scale. And apart from that, I play jazz mostly, and I've already improvised in Dorian (Pink Panther), Phrygian (Lingus by Snarky Puppy), Lydian (Take the A Train), Mixolydian (Cerebro Congelado by Gordon Goodwin) and Locrian (not a lot, but over G7 in Take the A Train for example)
Might not be the best examples, it's just what came to my mind spontaneously.
These scales are generally quite useful for jazz improvisation.

Also Xavi liked this thread, so I guess we can call it... Xavi-approved?

Aside from the standard Ionian and Aeolian, I’d say Mixolydian is probably the most common. Add in allowance for encountering one of the other five randomly, and that ought to take care of most people’s experience with music. Jazz definitely will introduce you to some of the more obscure (and more fun) parts of music theory.

Didn’t someone make a thread somewhere about all the musical references in items at one point?

The next step after improvising on the those scales is improvising on the chord notes themselves. Obviously you are going to have to add many notes in between the chord notes (and more interesting stuff like 9, #9, #11, 13), but using the chord notes will make it sound more harmonically pleasant.

Dorian is more commonly used than mixolidian.

Well, that's exactly my way oft improvising. It's just that if you add all these extensions, you often end up with one of these scales. For example the cord notes of Cmaj13(#11) are the same notes as C Lydian.
Both are quite common, not sure which one is more
I think it was only about references to musicals

Btw it's kinda funny how this thread turned into a discussion about jazz theory

Well, the way western music harmony works, is by stacking 3rds on to the base note. The further away from the base note you go, the less “stable” the note sounds - it also has less impact or on the chord as a whole, but will add more color to it. When playing Cmaj13(9,#11), you are going to want to not stay on the less stable notes - like F#. However, we still use F# when, for example, going between notes: if we want to go from an E to a G, then F# is the way to go and not F natural, because F natural conflicts with the harmonic structure of that measure.
So my point is that instead of improvising on a scale, we improvise on the most “stable” notes (usually until the 9) and use the more “colorful” notes in between.

Again exactly what I think as well.

Also just out of interest, what instrument(s) do you play? I play piano mainly and drums as a second instrument
