Music Fanmade Orphion Boss Theme

Spoiler: the version where i messed with the percussion a bit

so,

i couldn't actually listen to the song effectively when i was making it cause noteblock studio didn't like the note density and decided to just cut out some of the sounds when i used the play button.

anyway, yeah. it's a boss theme for orphion, the big bad dog (light beast) that got a tapeworm (infected by a parasite).
except he's really forgotten and nobody ever mentions him anymore ahahahaha.

It really fits the Wynncraft music style honestly. Very fitting!

And that's why we say quality over quantity. Having more notes doesn't make your piece better, certainly not when it borders on "note spam". You may "quasi-brag" about having over five thousand notes, but most of these come from repeating the chords a thousand times every beat, which gets jarring especially when you're just hearing a stream of ear-piercing sounds in the upper register. I wouldn't say that the motifs in your piece are particularly interesting, mainly because of their rhythm, which is 1. my opinion and 2. not necessarily the worst thing in the world, but you don't seem to do anything than repeat them, alternatively repeat them at a different pitch and give them a resolution before moving onto the next set of four repetitions of the same motif. You never take the time to variate upon a theme meaningfully and always stick to the the same formula. This makes the structure of your piece extremely predictable. A simpler issue to fix in the future would be the drums. Right now they overpower the melody to a ridiculous degree and also don't play anything interesting. They stay the same through the whole piece and might as well not be there. Lastly, somewhat ironically, is your intro. Its buildup is like every other Wynncraft song, be it official or fan-made, out there. Especially the drums before the main melody kicks in were predictable.

I hope this is feedback you can use to improve in the future, because I definitely don't want to discourage you from composing more, but this piece really doesn't quite cut it for me.

Also, out of interest, did you first write out your piece in actual notes or did you just use NBS?

This is really good! Although i do agree with @Stormarend , It is a little repetitive. The melody, the percussion, and the bass is all really great, but hearing it over and over for that long is a little too much.

If I made this piece, i would choose between one of two options: Either just make it shorter, like a minute is good, take out some of the areas which sound very similar to other areas/areas that are the same. You can also change it to include some transitions, and some places where the melody and percussion change (for example making a quieter part in the middle, which leads to a very loud part (loud part would be probably 1:33), could spice it up a little, instead of just hear "note spamming" for most of the piece.

Last thing from me is the percussion - You said that you were still figuring it out, and I have some tips for you: just add more transitions, even between sections of 2 measures, to make the percussion sound more dynamic. It would also sound really good if for some part of the piece, maybe in the middle, you just changed drum styles. Anything that will give the percussion a less static feeling.

These are just my opinions, and I think the music itself sounds really really good, and fits the wynncraft theme entirely, but when listening to the piece as a whole, there are some things that I would improve.

 

Orphion is really forgotten. I can't believe after all this time that they still haven't added him. I think this will be a dungeon, as at the end of the quest they just say to you that you can now fight him and they don't make it part of the quest. Obviously he will be something more then just a boss because if otherwise he would have been released with the realm of light. Also, gavel dosen't have any dungeons of its own (unless you count corrupted dungeons) and since the Light Realm is basically Gavel it would be nice to see. I think this song would fit really well for the boss. It's very well made and it gets the crappy emoji thumbs up from me

Wow! Closing my eyes, I feel like I'm actually in-game. Fits perfectly with the theme, and seems like an official soundtrack. Great job!
