"Why was he constantly badgering Abigail then?" I ask.

 

“Atavul works under a very strict code, and a rather brutal one at that. Chroma was to be given a day on Earth, untraced, should he chase Abigail out of her home. Atavul tried to back out of his half of that deal, demanding Chroma kill her. He wouldn’t, but he did go back for other atrocities in exchange for time he hoped to bring assistance back with him. Atavul sent him back to Earth mutilated last time, not bothering to heal him before starting his clock. Regardless, he hoped to turn her anger towards Atavul, and clearly never did.”

 

"Getting Abigail pissed at something is a very careful and dangerous process. If you don't know her well enough, well...you'll just get her pissed off at you," I say, shaking my head, "She's like her own element. Fire is dangerous to you and others. Know how to direct it and you'll be a lot safer than just trying to pick it up and throw it, but that doesn't mean it still can't consume you."

If you can't think of anything else, we are sort of playing hot and cold with Anne's scent... even though right now we're very cold but getting warmer.

"Considering Katie's sister is dead because of her, noted. If she ever comes into my palace, I'll have her contained. Appreciate the warning."

 

"Alright well I didn't say she was some murderous psychopath that can be turned into a weapon of mass destruction," I say, sounding a little annoyed, "She's a fire guardian with passion and a spiky exterior. She's also one of the most caring people I've met."

"Under the right circumstances, that is." I add.

 

"Can't hide that whole heartless episode." Idhaenna says.

 

"That wasn't her," I argue, "That was some twisted version of her I can't explain."

 

"I guess that's a game.. sort of."

 

"Was that also your excuse for killing Vei?"

I go silent.

"No." I say, after a long pause.

 

Idhaenna glances at you after you finally respond.
"So Ihra does mean something to you..." She mumbles.

 

"What game can you play with yourself?"

 

We have two people, isn't there some rock-paper-knife game kids play?

 

"Would that work? I mean.. we could try.."

 

I don't know how to play, I just saw two kids playing it when we were in town and thought you might know how to play. We're two different people, after all.

 

"What kind of comment is that?" I ask in an accusatory tone, "Of course Ihra means something to me! She's my friend!"

 

"Most people aren't friends with people they've stabbed and left an orphan. You also show no remorse whatsoever for killing anyone, even children; yet do show remorse specifically for killing Vei." Idhaenna says flatly. "You keep saying you're a monster, but you seem to only mean it when Ihra's not around."

 

"We need our hands for that game, right?"
