Hey guys, so this is a theory that I’ve had on my mind for a while and I feel like sharing it:

    WARNING: SPOILERS AHEAD:

This is what my theory implies:
    - Cataclysm was responsible for ripping a hole in spacetime to create the Nether Portal
    - The Ancients of Wynn who created the Crystals used that weapon to access the Nether to gather corruption for the crystals themselves.

Alright: Here’s my theory to support everything I said so far:

    - If we read the lore for Cataclysm, it says that despite the existence of the Nether Portal, few believe it is possible for someone to rip a hole through time and space to access another realm. It’s isn’t even believed that a weapon with that much force can even exist... and then it implied that Cataclysm is exactly that.
Emphasis on the first part: Despite the existence of the Nether Portal.
This means that the Nether Portal is not a natural portal to another realm, like the Light’s Secret.

So this basically confirms that the Nether Portal is not naturally occurring; someone created that weapon, and thousands of years before it was found in 0 AP, ripped a hole through spacetime to access the Nether.

Who could create such a weapon, though?
All of our possible candidates have to be an established civilization before 0 AP.
The Olm were specialized in traveling throughout the past and imbuing weapons with that magic. Humans were not aware of the Nether’s existence until 0 AP, and the Twain library specifically states that Humans were not prolific magic wielders, and had to be taught magic. There would be an occasional gifted child that knew how to use magic without teaching, but they were rarely strong enough to pull off impressive feats, or even use their powers to fight the Corruption. The Desert Empire never left the Almuj Desert that much until Hashr came along.

    The Ancients, then?
We know the Ancients come from Dern, running from the Eye. They mention that their knowledge of magic was supposedly way beyond what the province had ever seen. This is even more bolstered by how they were able to extract, and combine together power that could destroy the world, or change it.

Amadel already said that the power of the Crystals came from the Corruption. Meaning that somehow, somewhere, they were able to find a source of Corruption so strong it could change the world, and imbue it within the Crystals.

Where else could that come from but the Nether? Amadel was as strong, if not stronger than Bak’al and the CoW, and CoW was deep within the Nether when he was corrupted, right where the Corrupted Army was.

We’ve cleared that The Nether portal was ripped open and created by someone powerful. Someone who could create a weapon that with sheer force could rip open a hole in the realm.

The Ancients had magic that Wynn had never been able to reach yet. Not even the Olm, with their time magic, were supposedly able to reach the level of magic. It is not out of reach that they would be able to create a weapon with the strength necessary to rip a hole to the Nether. They had plenty of reason to, as well, Since they needed a source of corruption strong enough for whatever they used the Crystals for.

So far, until another group shows up, they’re the most likely candidate. They had more reason to access the Nether than anyone else, the magical power to do so (guessing), and being creatures of Darkness, they were much more likely to be aware of the Nether/Corruption’s existence than a natural Wynn inhabitant/human.

    To wrap it all up:
The Nether Portal is not naturally occurring, and was created by some sort of entity using Cataclysm to access the realm.
The Ancients of Wynn, after escaping from Dern, decided that the best way to protect themselves would be to imbue 4 Crystals with Corruption. They created a weapon, Cataclysm, in order to open a portal to the Nether, from which they extracted a huge amount of Corruption to create the Crystals. This however, wasn’t the best idea, as the Corruption simply drove them insane, and apparently, The Eye was still able to affect them despite being all the way in the Dernel Jungle.

    thanks for reading

So the power to create rifts in space is at roughly 13-14k spins. Interesting.
My theory is that the Ancients were the one engineered assassin to have 35% thunder conversion on spins to be able to use Cata to open the Portal.
I feel like it's always been implied that Cata caused the Portal, but never really associated it with the Ancients, nice theory!

there's no evidence that it was actually cataclysm. the skyraider girl just called it a cataclysm-in-a-box. she didn't even specify what sort of weapon it was. besides, the guy had no idea that it was an over 1,000 year old relic that has shaped the history of the world permanently.

And who knows, maybe it was lost and hidden, then that random guy just happened to find it? Maybe like the Crystals, the Ancients decided that they shouldn't tamper with the power to rip holes in reality?

And that would be a complete lore contradiction. If the Skyraiders had it locked up better than a rich guy could do, how could the player find it lying around in a random cave? or wherever he/she canonically finds it

the inference can be made in that it's described as a world-destroying weapon and that it's described as mythic
not necessarily: there could be multiple (like in the case of pure), and the player having something they very probably shouldn't be able to due isn't due to quest npc protection isn't unprecedented (in the case of warp)

But seriously though, where on Earth did the Olm come from, AND WHAT WAS THE COSMIC EVENT THAT APPARENTLY SUCKED THE SOUL OUT OF THEM? Also I apparently think that Old Man Martyn is a Olm, he knows time magic, he can use it, and Asher literally asks "Are you even human?

That's its old lore. Cataclysm used to be so powerful lore-wise that it didn't even make sense how literally any mob could even be in the player's presence while he/she was wielding it. Meaning; it could literally rip universes out of existence, like they were never there at all.

"Few believe in the possibility of a crash of realms, in which an entire world or universe is simply cut from existence. Fewer still believe that tools exist to make such an event occur. None believed that one could be found within this realm. And yet..."

Nowadays, it can open portals. Besides, they had no idea what was actually in the box, just that the aristocrat had a lot of people guarding it alongside his giant ass stash of gems and stuff. If the thing in the box is actually cata, then the skyraider girl just was lucky to guess.

Warp was a complete failure. Gawrick didn't really know what he was doing and didn't count for what it would take physically. I'm guessing he decided to dump it out, not knowing that it was actually useful.

There's nothing to suggest that there are multiple Pures in existence. There were multiple different items carved from the meteor, yes, such as millennium, but nothing says that Pure was carved more than once.

Besides, Cataclysm was so rare, and so ungodly powerful that people refused to believe such a weapon was possible, or even existed, despite there being evidence otherwise.

    -----

And like I said, if that was Cataclysm, there could be a number of reasons how if got into the aristocrat's hands. For one, I doubt the Ancients just left it lying around. They might have hidden it, it could have been picked up by a haggler or something, and then the aristocrat might have bought it, realizing "holy shit that is a VERY good weapon".

Anyways, we're getting off topic. How the aristocrat supposedly didnt found Cataclysm is another story I'll try and figure out later. My theory is resided in how the Ancients, Cata, and the Nether Portal can all be tied together.

isn't it already established that corruption occurs between a light force and a dark one? gavel being light, dern being dark, and wynn in the middle.

from the quest of taproot, we see that in the past it was not dark, it just transformed to what it is now because of the decay, a whole different story.

I can't help but laugh whenever Wynncraft brings up various forms of explanations that boil down to "The decay behaves exactly like the corruption in Wynn, but it's actually entirely different! Because... reasons!"

But how did they know the Nether existed before the portal was created? Are there multiple, much smaller portals that they found, but deemed not powerful enough for their needs, so they created a massively big one? Why would someone even have created Cataclysm in the first place, if not to just create a powerful weapon? And how did they make it? If you can make a weapon that can create rifts in space-time, why would you need those rifts, if you're that powerful?
