Is gear crafting worth it? How does crafting Armor & Weapons work exactly? I noticed they have durability which is different. I'm leveling up for the first time, should I be grinding for my gear or crafting it?

Well, grinding the gear takes pretty long, but the crafted gear can be VERY overpowered in the endgame.
How it works: First, you harvest resources. Then, you refine the resources, and gather ingridients. At last, you combine the resources with the ingridients at the proper crafting station to craft the item.
Durablity is just, well, durablity. Crafted items slowly become less effective. You can repair them at a blacksmith by using scrap (A resource gained from scrapping armour/weapons at the blacksmith)

On your first playthrough, I'd recommend using loot chests/mobs as your primary source of gear for the reasons stated above. Crafting can be good if you put in a lot of time, particularly at endgame.

If your going to do it, I would recommend only doing one crafting profession, maybe 2-5 if you have a real background in grinding but don't be that lunatic who goes for all 8 of the damn things because you will more than likely just suffer a major burn out (I know) and you won't want to do it anymore because its just too much to handle. I would personally argue that doing consumables isn't really worth its time concerning that once its used its gone and they don't sell for a lot either, where as with crafted items if you use all the right stuff you can make some seriously op pieces of equipment which you can then sell on the market (When its fixed that is) and make a lot of money which you can use to buy a mythic if you want to if you've done it enough. It's a hefty procedure by all means but it certainly doesn't come without profit.

consumables can last pretty damn long, food can last a full hour for example, making them worthwhile IMO

depends on which ingredients and all, but it can be worthwhile enough for that
I'm not an IM or anything and I'm definitely not a walking crafting guide, so maybe it's not worth it at all. But in theory it's been balanced to be worth it

That's a problem you haven't thought about "in theory"is not the same as in practice it is not a lie that under 10% of all crafting ideas on the dedicated forum section are consumable based, 7 hours of work =/= 30 minutes of a consumable and concerning that the majority of people who Could craft the items wouldn't want to because the power of their current weapons and armour are already too powerful, and the ones who do need them can't craft them because of the dreadfully long time required to level up the proficiency. Also just a heads up, people are in no way fascinated by having a time limit strapped on something.

Oh yeah let's not mention either that its 50x cheaper and takes 1000x times less time to just buy an elemental potion.

Once you got the required level and a nice food recipe, it's easy to replicate it if it lasts for a long time while being worth it. Someone might not want to spend money in elemental pots.
We're looking for ways to improve all of this, but as a GM I can't guarantee anything since that part of the game isn't my job

theres like 50 people willing to craft stuff for you aslong as you supply the ingredients because they want XP. Imo it really isn't worth it and I would worry about trying to either grind for a mythic or resell to get enough to buy a crafted piece of armor. Keep in mind the longer crafted ingredients the out, the more there will be which makes them way cheaper in the future. (like liquid emeralds 5 years ago to now)

The only way I would get back into crafting consumables if I could use scrap to remake it. I can't really think of anything else that would appeal to me more tbh because in all honesty, if I was given the option to make a potion that allowed me to insta kill anything for five minutes I still wouldn't bother going through the effort to make it, Oh yeah they also take up more inventory space on people whose inventory is already full of crafting ingredients and sell for pretty much nothing.

Regarding consumables, I could see XP/loot/walkspeed consumables being useful. Unless the difference in base values is massive though, I don't see T3 materials being used very much, if at all. Combat consumables are unlikely to have a large consumer base, since in general the people able to afford them tend to be veterans, who are on average better at combat than new players, especially since everything in the game can be beaten without too much trouble without consumables, sole exception being possibly LI.

Also worth noting that the lack of lengthy lootruns means cooking T3 materials are particularly unlikely to be used. I do see a good market for XP scribing consumables though, particularly since DCave has a lot of people in a small.amount of space.

Really, it depends how much you decide to grind, crafting is the only easy way to get accessories low level, however most items are RIDICULOUSLY overpowered late game. (Also some materials are worth a bit of money)

If you're lazy don't worry about it
If you like doing stuff, do it
