SPOILER Exploring The New Hive

@Selvut283 wondered why there wasn't a thread about this yet, so I decided to make one.
Don't know if all this is common knowledge, but I haven't seen many people talk about it.

The Hive got a revamp in 1.18, and it is even more interesting than it was before.

The first thing you'll notice about the hive is either the cool rebuild or the guards standing outside. The hive now feels a bit more like a safe residence, rather than a large structure out in the wild. I only have one question about this: what are the purple worms that you encounter in the canyon of the lost? Are they some of Qira's failed creations? After all, the guard drones will attack them.

Both the NPCs that sell the gear and transfuse them are found in the same room, which is a long hallway.

The quest itself got some changes too, with a lot of enemy revamps (apparently the fights have been made harder), and some new dialogue.

(I'm only at the water division, if someone could provide the rest of the new dialogue that would be nice)

Some of the mobs you'll fight even use new models!


For me however, the most interesting part of the hive came from stuff not related to the quest. For starters, there are now hive servants NPC, with plenty of dialogue that changes when you beat Qira.

Let's start with the first servant:

When you think about it, money is never a part of the hive. All trade is done through selling tokens. Maybe Qira hates the idea of greed, and knows that it caused trouble throughout Gavel?

I also love that meta joke at the end about the community thinking Qira's evil.

This servant really likes Qira.

Then there's this guy.

According to him, Qira likes to be in charge and might be a bit haughty. Not surprising from someone who calls you a mortal.

He's probably just being a cynic... or maybe this isn't over yet for me. Qira fight 2 anyone?

Unlike the previous servant, he doesn't seem the least bit pleased about his job.

Then, things start to get depressing.

Unlike the first servant, this villager has a reason to go back to his old life, but for whatever reason he can't. Is he forced to stay? Does he feel obliged to say? I can't help but feel bad that he's the reason we have our ultra-powerful hive gear...

A question this raises: how did he get "plucked off the streets"? Who's recruiting people for the hive anyway?

How long has the hive been around anyway? How many villagers have died here, only to be replaced?

Ah yes, the secrets! I'll get to those in a bit.

Behind the hive, there's an incredible new grindspot, which is better than what we had before 1.18. It seems like a high-risk, high-reward sort of place.


As for the secrets mentioned? We don't really have much new stuff. Gale's Tomb is still around and it serves no real purpose aside from being something cool to find. There's also this thing, and I have no clue what it does. It isn't a hopper either.


There are also the secret passageways within the hive walls. They don't lead to anything, although there's a tier 1 lootchest along the route. This has been around since Gavel and has had no changes, aside from how you access it at first.

If you climb on the cobwebs while following a trail of purple clay/glass and dark grey wool, you'll find this entrance.

Which leads to another passage, and then another. At some point, you'll encounter Eclectic Sentries, which are level 110 mobs that shoot stuff at you and teleport. It finally leads to a good view of the hive (which can be found at the top of the thread). I guess the journey is the reward.

And that's it I guess. If you have any new dialogue let me know because I want to see it. All in all, I think this revamp and new lore additions are pretty cool.

Ooh, I'm gonna have to go through The Hive again to see all the fancy new stuffs. Excited :D
I noticed a little bit of it, as I was mining diamonds right next to the entrance, but didn't really pay much attention to it

Wow, that’s quite a lot of new stuff. What are the ‘Hive Guidebooks’ mentioned when you finish the quest though?

 

Is it just me or does this new design for the hive resemble the purple-ringed spiky terrain that Grian showed in his thread about Dern a while back?
