Serious Antitheistic Video Essays

Before you watch, just keep in mind that it holds a lot of antitheistic content. For those of you who are theistic (Belief in a religion proposing a God), you may not want to watch this video. For those of you unaware of what Antitheism is, we can dissect the word into to parts, 'Anti' meaning 'Against', and 'Theism' meaning 'A religion proposing or believing in a Deity(s), God(s), or higher power(s)'. Putting those together we get the definition of 'Rejecting or Against a religion proposing or believing in a Deity(s), God(s), or higher power(s)."

(Also I'm confused, should this be Nemract's bar or Your Work? I'll put it here, I want discussion.)

With that in mind, it is up to you to decide to watch this video. Reactions/Discussions/Debates is encouraged. Do note I may make this a series of 3-5 videos. If you're interested in more antitheistic videos/content, I'd recommend watching Bill Maher's documentary 'Religulous', or a video on YouTube by Darkmatter2525 titled 'The Greater Insult'.

I'm having a lot of fun making and writing these, will definitely do more. Do I hate all religious people?

No, I do not. I've met many religious people (Mostly Muslim, Christian, and Jewish) that are kind, loving, and caring. I'm an anti-theist because of a similar mentality to why you cut away from yourself when cooking: Always cut away to prevent getting cut sometimes. Do something always to prevent a sometimes. Because there are many examples of hypocrisy and faith-justified or religious harm, my view on religion is 'Never (which is kind of like an always?!) have religion, to prevent sometimes that religion has caused big and genuine harm.

not trying to flamewar, just want a genuine discussion

i've never claimed that fictitious works cant teach valuable morals. if you can point out some part in the video i did, i will retract that statement without hesitation.
i guess my main point for this video is 'these are just stories. they're just as reliable as fairytales in terms of actual truth' and i use the theogony as an example because it's just myths. the idea behind the video was supposed to be 'don't trust that what is in this book actually happened or the events it describes happened, or if the people in it were real, or any stuff like that, because you can so easily draw comparisons between classical mythology and the bible. it's stories, that's it'. because thinking that everything in the bible is true and should be taken literally can cause serious damage

you even admit it, forcing yourself into taking the bible literally can cause you to have to bend, warp, and twist reality so that it matches up with what amounts to a fairytale. that is the kind of damage i want to prevent and expose. when people become incompatible with objective reality, huge damage can occur, even aside from religion.

1. You bring up Religulous saying 'you could hardly say that SLC, the Vatican, and Jerusalem are representative os the entirety of Christendom', and I actually don't disagree at all (I mean, I never claimed that), and I don't think Maher does either, that's why I think he went out of the way to also find everyday normal people in religions and interview them as well as higher up church official. My memory is a little fuzzy, but I remember there was one time he went out of his way to find a kind of 'pocket church' that served as a place where truckers went to church on the road and asked the actual attendees.
2. The idea behind the quote you mentioned was meant more to be 'If you think that everything in the Old and New Testaments literally happened and that there is an invisible man in the sky and watches everything everyone does all the time forever and if you do ONE thing wrong you will be sent to hell to be tortured and suffer and be in pain... BUT HE LOVES YOU!!! (as George Carlin put it) and once you've convinced yourself of stuff that didn't happen or stuff incompatible with objective truth, that's when the problem starts' Once you've convinced yourself that something like that is true, it probably becomes much easier to bend reality on other things. It makes you more used to being able to accept fake or not whole truths. So circling back to why taking the Bible literally 100% of the time can cause damage: Bending the truth is terrible, and it opens you up to accepting other fake truths. Being misinformed on a lot of things can be damaging. I want to take 2 examples:

First, a lot of the anti-same-sex marriage people were Christian, and no wonder: "If a man lies with a male as with a woman, both of them have committed an abomination; they shall surely be put to death." (Leviticus 20:13). While the problem here isn't exactly taking the bible literally, the problem is taking something from the Bible meant for people of a different time.

Second, in 2016, 58% Protestant/other Christians voted for Trump, and 52% of Catholics voted for Trump. Now, one of the reasons I think that they are already drawn to and have the ability to bend the truth, something that he has done both as a candidate and a president constantly. There are obviously other factors in play, but I think that should be noted.


tl;dr: Didn't phrase that right, my bad. Meant to say that if you take everything from the Old and New Testaments literally even when it contradicts with common knowledge or objective truth, then there can be damage. But I mean there can be damage earlier like I mentioned with the first example.

I'm not claiming that all Christians are stupid, I'm saying that for some that take the Bible too seriously, it can create damage. I'm not saying it's the majority, but imagine it like the common rule of cutting away from yourself. You do it always to prevent a sometime. That's a little bit of my Antitheistic philosophy: Dismantle large scale, organized religion because sometimes, there will be the goddamn crusades. Sometimes, there will be electing a narcissistic egomaniac that is incompatible with truth because he is incapable of remembering his flaws. Sometimes, you get anti-vaxxers. Sometimes, you get genuine harm. BUT AGAIN, THAT IS NOT TO SAY ALL CHRISTIANS ARE BAD!! My grandparents are Christians, and great people, too. They're progressive, generous, kind people. I know people from this community that are Christian, and one of them is basically the kindest, most understanding, progressive, skilled person I've ever met from this community.

 

Is Antitheism different from atheism

 

Yes. If we dissect the word 'Atheism' we get 2 different parts: 'A' meaning 'Not' and 'theism' meaning 'A religion proposing or believing in a Deity (or deities), God (or gods)' or higher power of some kind'

Now, if we dissect the word 'Antitheism' we got 2 parts: 'Anti' meaning 'Opposite, against, opposing or rejecting' and 'Theism' meaning 'A religion proposing or believing in a Deity (or deities), God (or gods)' or higher power of some kind'

Putting the 2 parts together, we get the word 'Antitheism' meaning 'Against, opposing, or rejecting a religion proposing or believing in A deity/deities, God or gods, or higher power of some kind.'

 

But in real life, is there a significant difference between the two groups? I understood the linguistic part, but I was wondering if it translated into any large divide in practice

 

Ehh not as far as I know, but if you look into antireligious protests you're gonna find more antitheists. I guess atheists are more neutral but I don't know.

Athiests tends to oppose God but not religion,
Agnostics tend to be unsure about both,
Irreligious tend to oppose religion but not God, and Religious tend to support both.
