Why are people greedy?

 

To understand that let's evaluate from first principles; What is Greed?

Almost every human being in their life at one point or another feels meaninglessness, emptiness and hollowness within. The effort to fill that emptiness within, stuff it with a lot of materials on the outside, without realising the futility of it and being stuck in it unconsciously is greed. There is a very valid reason why I've used the word futile while coming up with the very definition of greed. It is a futile effort bound to fail for a simple reason that the hollowness or emptiness is on the inside, it is within us, it's a spiritual problem and the entire humanity suffers from it but the whole effort of Greed is on the outside, materialistic.

The emptiness or hollowness or meaninglessness of life that all human beings invariably experience within is qualitative, its a quality of our own being but the effort of greed is quantitative, it changes nothing qualitatively within us but tries to achieve quantities, numbers on the outside.

Greed is a quality of the unconscious, it's like a fever, an illness, sickness, it's not even survivalistic as people try to justify it, it's a perversion of basic survivalistic tendency it's going out of balance and to the extreme.

It's obviously a survivalistic tendency to have decent savings & accumulate money for comfort but it's certainly a perversion, a symptom of sickness that comfort, joy and celebration in life which are the real purposes beyond survival take the backseat and the tendency to just go on accumulating unconsciously while remaining unfulfilled goes unchecked. That's what greed simply is.

Our mind keeps giving us false hopes, it keeps on giving us ambitions, projections, illusions that piles & heaps of money is going to fulfill us. This ambition, this desire and projection of a richness and success in the future is nothing but a indicator of miserable present, of the emptiness & hollowness within oneself. You ask “Why people are so greedy.” Mind's consolation for a miserable present moment is projection, illusion of a rich & fulfilled future, this poor consolation, this illusion, this unfulfillment is the reason why people are greedy. Because they are evading and escaping themselves, they're trying to change things on the outside without encountering the inside they're greedy.

If $1 million isn't able to fulfill us it's unintelligent and utterly foolish to think that maybe $1 billion will, nothing is going to happen by quantitatively creating a bigger pile on the outside while completely ignoring and forgetting the inside. But we go on imitating, following the mob, the crowd, the society while completely ignoring our own being, we live in a mob hypnosis thinking that if everyone's doing a certain thing it must be right.

More importantly the fact needs to be encountered that what we perceive as inner emptiness, hollowness and meaninglessness isn't really hollow or empty but is a kind of fulfillment on its own. That emptiness is infact not empty at all, it is a kind of fullness, just some acquaintance with it is needed and that's what meditation is. To simply become acquainted with oneself, one's inner emptiness, which is blissful. To encounter and become comfortable with own being is meditation. Once we're fulfilled from within there is no need to be greedy and all our perversions including greed disappear and the only way to achieve that is meditation.

There hasn't been any other way and there will never be. I hope people become intelligent enough at least conscious enough to encounter themselves and work on the actual problem. Being unconscious and as a result being greedy simply aggravates the problem. Unconsciousness is the root of all problems of humanity, greed is simply a small symptom of the basic disease of unconsciousness!
