Here's a summary of what has been happening in province-wide news in the two days leading up to Act 2.
This is in-character knowledge for everyone except @BlueSlimerino, who has been in hiding.

The news of the events at the Royal Palace have spread like wildfire and the names Dermit and and known in infamy across the Province. Strangely, Deepwater and Kalitsk, the two other conspirators, have managed to escape blame, but there can be no doubt that Elimut is aware of their involvement. Elimut’s formal announcement of his claim to the throne the next day is met with widespread celebration, and with the Palace in no fit state for rule while repairs are underway, he is currently residing in the Duke of Olux’s country estate, more or less without the Duke’s input on the matter. This move is controversial - Cinfras has always been the seat of the Kings and it is often heard whispered that a true leader of the people would have remained in the remains of his home - after all this was what those affected by the Cataclysms usually did when they could.

Togak has formally pardoned Dermit for attacking him and for his explosive departure from the Palace, with no reason given. While many still trust his wisdom, this has caused suspicion amongst the valley elves, many of whom already resented his policy of appeasement towards the villagers.

An election has been called in the Forest Coalition for a new High Delegate. Doushoins’ cousin Fernagie is the leading candidate, running on a platform of absolute trust of Elimut, but radical wood elf Alreiss Lorser, who wishes to secede from the Kingdom of Gavel, is also popular, as is mermaid Freia of the Shining Scales, who wishes to end the dominance of Hobbits and Elves in the Coalition, hoping to unite the minor races.

Ozoth has launched an attack on the Dwarven colony of Thanos in Bantisu, making off with a portion of their riches and killing many. Construction of a vault beneath the extensive mining network of the underground town has started to protect against future attacks. King Rogdon has blamed this on the Doguns’ breaking of the Dragon Containment Treaty, to which Torl issues the formal reply, shouted by messengers across the Heights, “How the fuck was it our fault?”. She seems shaken by the events of at the Staircase, which she has woven into a grand conspiracy revolving around a half-melted pendant found next to the Eye bearing the crest of the Ahmsian mining family Joestar, which ultimately blames the whole thing jointly on King Rogdon, the late Duke Forserd of Ahms and King Brian III, and ultimately plans to renounce the Nation’s ties to the Cinfras Crown. Many believe her, but faith in her leadership is rapidly dwindling, as is Villager faith in the Doguns. However, there are rumours of the involvement of another group, the Brotherhood of the Heights, a mysterious organisation believed to be fictitious.

Oh, you don't reply, there's a time skip, but I'll take the attitude into consideration.

You’ve been in hiding only two days, but it feels like a year. Halster is moody and dismissive and Dermit is barely able to speak, so despite the company it’s been as lonely as it is boring and degrading, hopping from uncomfortable hiding spot to uncomfortable hiding spot as fast as you can when nobody’s looking, since Halster insists on doing all the scout work himself. If Dermit wasn’t there, you’d be able to use a vanish spell, but he is in no position to cast spells. Halster laments the heal spell only working on recent wounds. You’ve reached the final hiding spot before the Aldorei border, a damp cave in the side of a hill that stinks of trolls (“shut the fuck up about it, they’re not here now are they?”), and once again you press Halster for details on his scouting.
“For the last fucking time, you don’t need to know. All you need is that Aldorei will take us. Just a few minutes and we can cross the border. Then we stop off, Demit gets healing, we all get disguises and we head to Olux, where Deepwater will meet us if she’s still alive. That clear enough? For Remikas’ fucking sake Kalitsk.”
He’s more resentful of you than ever, and you get the feeling there’s something he’s not telling you.

After being escorted out of the area by Dogun soldiers, you and Bantira travel back to her apartment in Grinefez. Your involvement in recent events is no secret, and you have to frequently swat people away just to get to the Academy. Not that things are easier there. Headmaster Juntabi has returned but seems oddly distant and mournful. Lessons seem to more and more focus on offensive magic, and even tactics for the use of magic in battle. It seems most have given up on the idea of peace. When Bantira hears of this she’s even more insistent on travelling the world, as she is telling you now, over dinner.
“Look at where we are. If war does break out, Grinefez is going to be at the front of it. I want out before we’ve got Dwarven ballistae on our doorstep. Whatever’s going down here, I don’t want either of us to get hurt.”
That seems uncharacteristically defeatist of her - she’s usually so idealistic. You wonder if something’s wrong.

The two days you spend in the cave with your dwarven companion, who refuses to give you her name (you call her Dwarfy) feel like two years. She talks almost constantly, about the importance of the work of the Brotherhood, corruption and evil on both sides, heroes within the organisation (although again, no names are given) and most of all how much she hates pretty much every major public figure in the Province. She talks so fast that your feeble Gert mind can’t really follow at all. It comes as a great relief, then, when a hooded figure deposits three bulging sacks, nods at you and vanishes into thin air. You’re leaving, for Ahms. She picks up one of the sacks, pushes the other two towards you and says, slightly worried, “You know the way, don’t you?” You, of course, do not.

You spend the night in an inn just outside of Cinfras, ready to travel to the Grand Academy, or what’s left of it. Smoke is still rising from the palace the following morning, but the fire has been extinguished. As you leave, the innkeeper reluctantly hands you an large package. Inside are fifty emeralds and a note. “Sorry for your experience at the Palace. Consider this compensation- Elimut”. He didn’t strike either of you as the generous type, even considering that fifty emeralds is nothing to a royal, so it seems rather strange. Putting it in Rin’s ring for safekeeping you head on your way. At dusk you arrive in Gylia City, an inapt name for a glorified village, and are told that Tarust and his students will be ready the following afternoon. After an uneventful night and morning, you arrive at the front door. Closed. You knock, no response. Lights are on upstairs, but it seems nobody’s there to let you in. Odd- you were told it would be open.

 

I grab the other two sacks.
”No, dwarfy person. North?”
