Void Rift (rp) - Intermission

"What did he want speak to Tenebrae about?" Katie asks.

 

I smile, get up, take the leash, and try to put it on the dog.

 

"Searching the edge of the Void for Emerald, I believe."

The dog has a plain red collar, the leash clipping on without a problem.

"Yes, a goddess. One of the six strongest in this reality. I've simply been exploring less... war-torn planets, as of late."

War torn? Is there some really big war we don't know about?

 

"Is the edge of the void dangerous?" Katie asks nervously.

 

I head out of my room and take the dog for a walk.

 

"Why come here of all places?"

 

The faux door opens into a stairwell down into a sizable courtyard, a few chew toys and tennis balls strewn about on either side of the path leading out to a gate.

“It’s not a battlefield. Things are pretty bad in other places, but it’s still peaceful here.”

“It’s both the safest place outside of Xlentia’s palace and many times more dangerous than having her trying to stomp you.”

 

I head to the gate, still holding the other end of the leash.

 

"Care to explain what this war is about?"

 

"Why's that?" Katie asks, confused.

 

“Almost nothing can live that far out in the Void, but the creatures who do are said to be so powerful that they stay in the edge regions not because they’re forced to, but because they forced Xlentia to permit they live there. Despite their monstrous strength and inability to verbally communicate, they aren’t usually hostile. I’ve passed by many while relaying messages, and they’re about as passive as they are intimidating. A few of them also seem to try and emulate things smaller beings do, albeit in sometimes unsettling ways. The one I passed by to get here has been working on a robe-like garment made of the bones of its prey. I don’t know the extent of their knowledge, but the beast did take my nod as a sign of approval and went back to work on the robe with more care than it had been.”

“One mortal has his head in the clouds, wanting to enslave us all for some silly prophecy he keeps spewing. We didn’t take him seriously until he actually enslaved one of the primal six, the most powerful gods governing this reality. I was able to defend myself from an attack, but his strength seems unending.”

The dog winds up pulling you slightly to the gate, nudging it open with his nose.

There is a latch, it just wasn’t closed.

 

"So, they're so powerful they have no need to be hostile, because nothing can possibly challenge them?" Katie asks.

 

“As far as I can tell, yes. They get territorial against other big creatures, though... which is why I slightly worry about Tenebrae. She’d need to make herself clearly not a threat, which is a risk with beasts that used to seeing nobody close to their size at all.”

 

"Well, she can change size. Maybe she could just be small?" Katie suggests.

 

“If it doesn’t tire her. I’ve seen them defend smaller void creatures from larger would-be predators, should they stumble upon their domain.”

 

"That's kind of them. Why would they do that?" Katie asks, confused.

 

“I don’t know. My best guess is that size is a gauge of threat to them, but I haven’t studied them too much.”

 

"Well, there are really deadly spiders that are small. Size isn't always an indication of threat." Katie says happily.

 

“I know, I’m just taking a guess. If I wasn’t in the condition I’m in now and if they weren’t so intimidating, I’d offer to show you one that’s sort of trying to draw.”

 

Katie pats Rineth on the shoulder gently.

"You should be better soon though! The doctors here are really good." Katie says happily.
