The Quest "Green Gloop" must be completed before you can gain access. You can start the quest at level 31 near a large mound of rock behind Almuj.

 

how do I get soft sand

 

Throughout the desert you'll see mobs called "shifting sandpile", represented by a sand block. Kill them and they'll drop soft sand.

 

Around the desert near Almuj, you will occasionally find mobs called "something something sand something". Its sprite will be a sand block. Upon killing it, it will drop 2 (I think) Soft Sand and also spawn some mobs.

 

In the dialogue, it clearly says "you can find them in the sand piles around the desert"
So just a tip for the future:
read the dialogue

not trying to be mean, just letting you know it's important to read what people have to say instead of just spamming through it :P

 

I second this statement.
Far too often players skip through the dialogue because they just wanna get the quest done with as soon as possible, when the dialogue is what contains the information about how to complete the quest. So then when they don't know what to do, it's because they never read the dialogue.

It's unfortunately understandable when you're used to some MMOs, where you usually skip a lot of dialogue
Wynncraft is incredible though, please don't skip dialogue :(
