He didn't say anything about the circumstances such as where, when, or to whom for that matter. So I'd be fine if you can make something up that would satisfy him.

 

Smokey shadow thing, then? Some kind of evil summon, made to cause mass panic?

Well, assuming you do something offscreen, it succeeds wildly. The normal (noble?) guests of the party scatter and flee, and the remaining half draws weapons. At least 3 separate groups of assassins converge on the host, and a different mass moves to protect him.
Not your fight.
One the other hand, your newly created... thing is happily rampaging. Also not your fight, not anymore. Honestly, this whole mess is a little confusing, but hey, you're getting paid.

Mansion's in chaos. What will you do?

The mage goes from an overly mocking expression to one of near... respect.
"Mmmm, you're interesting. If none of us get stabbed in our sleep, I'll introduce you to the woman over there in the morning. Have a nice night."

 

I walk outside the mansion, sit on the steps, and wait for the chaos to subdue.

 

The man who hired you exits out into the night, pipe in hand.
"Politics is much more fun down here, I have to admit."

Inside the house, somebody screams, and you can see the glow of a fire starting. Almost at the same time, he lights the pipe.
"Eliar bless that all these pompous nobles decided to build the outside of their houses out of out of stone. I'm not getting paid enough to deal with another city burning down. If you're waiting out the madness, no need. Meet me at the Crown and Dagger pub, down by the docks, tomorrow and I'll see you paid. Don't have that much gold on me right now. That'll change once my client hears that first in line for the throne's dead."

 

“Oh, wow. It was THAT high up? Dang.”
I stand up.
“All right, sounds good. Thanks for the business again.”

 

"See ya."
The man finishes his pipe, turning around and back into the mansion.

 

I get up and look for the nearest inn.

 

The richest areas in town start at 50 a night, so you tread on until you can find something more to your budget.
Inside your affordability range, you find 5 inns:
Vileean's Inn - All your gold/night
Will overlook any and all unscrupulous activity in exchange for your coin purse. Have a nice stay!

Brawler Brett's Brawlin' Inn - 13 GC/Night
There aren't any actual beds. You just fight and get drunk until you pass out on the floor.

Cozy Bella's Cozy Beds - 10 GC/Night
Seems nice. Innkeeper's an old crone who specifically stated she wants to kill you, though. Might be a problem.

The Lacerated Lute - 5 GC/Night
NO BARDS ALLOWED. Safety is not guaranteed, and this fine establishment is not responsible for accidental death.

The Dice and Dagger - 1 GC/Night
They just call it the 'Diced or Knifed' round 'ere. Rhyme's got a way to it, ya know? They actually legalized murder in here 'cause all the guards they sent died.

 

I guess I’ll take the Lacerated Lute.... oh boy....

 

If I find any bards on the fourth day, I'm gonna skin them alive.

 

I'll try to avoid you then

 

You step into the inn, deathly quiet due to the conspicuous lack of bards. The lower floor actually has curved walls, just to avoid bard-attracting corners. Hanging on the wall is a sign reading “(4) days since an unnessecary death! Let’s keep the streak up by not doing anything musical.”

The innkeeper is wiping a table in a staggered manner as not to accidentally create a rhythm, and you just get the slightest feeling he doesn’t like music.

 

“Hello, do you have a room open for tonight?”

 

"Yes. Sentence checks. Out. The price will. Be 5 gold."

 

"Sounds good."
I give him 5 gold.
