I’ve only been here since after 1.17, but read update changelogs for fun, and apparently Gavel revamped the item system? I was wondering how items used to work, for more understanding of the game and for suggesting things in the future.

There used to be only 7 identifications:

    - Loot Bonus
    - XP Bonus
    - Spell Damage % (You could reach 100% with the only end-game build)
    - Health Regen % (Useless)
    - Lifesteal (Overpowered and worked with spells like multihit)
    - Mana Regen (Exclusive for weapons and Sodeta Boots, not as good as it was today)
    - Mana Steal (Weapon exclusive, see lifesteal)

All damage was neutral, and armor gave defense boosts instead of health. (Everyone had a base 100 health). If you found an item that's higher level than the one you have, it's probably better. I might have gotten a few things wrong in my explanation, but that's probably because I hated the old item system.

    Before an item was like:

    weapon
    -Level req
    -Damage range

-A pitiful number of ids, lifesteal being broken
    -profit

    armor
    -Level req
    -armor

-A pitiful number of ids, lifesteal being broken

Also you could use 3 powders: blue, green, red.

Blue added knockback to your weapon, and feather falling(?) to your armor. It had its uses, but green was always better
Green added sharpness to your weapon, as well as thorns on your armor. Truly the best one for both armor and weapon
Red added fire aspect to your weapon and blast protection/knockback resistance on your armor. The knockback resistance was kinda useful but hardly noticeable, and the fire damage was literally a joke as it worked the vanilla way: doing 1 damage, not scaling with the mob's health.

You had to combine powders with the item of your choice in the crafting table

That's basically it. End game set was: Stalagmite, Crystals, Adamantite, Blue Mask. Could also be replaced with Champion armor when it was introduced for extra coolness: armor skins were on at that time and the champion set looked really good

No one's mentioned this yet but you had to identify an item one ID at a time, and you could use items without any IDs on them. Basically, you'd find a weapon and you'd know its damage + tier. Every time you went to the Item Identifier, it would reveal one of its stat. For each additional stat, the price would increase. There was also no rerolling items, no indicators of how good an ID was (the ***).

    It was a simpler time...
