I never thought I'd make a post here, but here it goes.

So recently I got back into building for Minecraft because the new update that came out recently and I needed more laid back games to play. I've played quite a bit of survival, and but as I played more I focused more on building. And my main problem with building is that I make the same. house. every. time.

I've tried to make different variations, especially with the second floor, over-hangs, windows, and the roof, but there isn't one that I like particularly.

I also tried to use a different color pallet, but I've been trying to go for an English-ish medieval style. I wouldn't mind going for a more rustic look, but every time I try a different style I lose track of what I'm trying to do.

So I guess what I'm trying to ask is that what are some types I could use to improve these builds? Specifically, what are some elements of a good housing build? I have btw watched Grian's videos, and they are good, it's just that I'm having trouble putting them into practice.

As a sidenote, do you guys know about any mods in 1.13 that are like the Little Tiles mod or the MicroBlocks mod? They focus on cutting blocks and using tiny pieces to add lots of detail to smaller builds. https://www.google.com/search?q=min...AUICygC&biw=1536&bih=759#imgrc=HbnHbpai7OOhlM:
I'd love to use a mod like them because sometimes I feel that blocks by themselves make builds way too big or bulky, and most blocks don't have slabs and fewer have staircases. There are just so many instances I found while building that I said to myself, "This would look better if I had smaller pieces to work with." If you guys know of any mods, even if they're in 1.12, I'd be happy to know about them.

I'm not a builder but a general tip that I use just for survival is to build with the surroundings, like a house suspended in midair under a cliffside, or a desert temple built around one of those desert wells. Or a castle built around a village to act like their mayor or ruler. Just thinking "what would go here" is a good way to test different build styles and expiriment with different building structures. Also with 1.13, I'm testing with the new "sprint swimming" feature as a means to travel to different rooms to my house to act like a "warp pipe" of sorts.

I gotcha. I was just trying not to make it too complicated, especially since my home in my survival world is in the plains.

Little off topic, I tried transforming a Nether brick fortress from scratch, and Nether brick is just God awful. It's already dark and foggy in the Nether as is, and the only contrasting color that fits the theme of the Nether is red Nether brick, which isn't that bright next to the regular ones and has the same texture. Unlike the regular version, it doesn't have any fences, stairs, or even slabs, so you can't even use it for that much anyway. So all you have to work with is this dark, ugly brick block that's impossible to discern even in daylight. Just look at this: https://imgur.com/f3sWFpB. You can't even make out the fences and stairs I used for the entrance until you get really up close, which even then it's still hard to look at: https://imgur.com/gk1KAGD.

TL:DR The texture for Nether brick shouldn't exist.

i checked and sadly chisels and bits is still in 1.12.2. so no 1.13 blocks. i would swap the concrete for wool for the sake of adding more texture. the concrete is flat color wise. aside from that the windows look a little awkward but practice makes perfect

In my old builds I always used wool, so I was at first hesitant to use concrete, but after awhile I kinda like it. It’s alsp nice in survival because it’s fire proof :-/

yeah the fire proof is useful but since you're in creative id recommend using wool and turning fire spread off. imo it looks to shiny and white and bright so I wouldn't use it but its your build so do whatever you want

Yeah, just one or two things related to placement. Personally, I don't really like the symmetry of it. I feel that the shape on the first house is a little box-y and it is a little annoying. I would recommend that when planning it out, start with a rectangle or 'L' shape, then add smaller boxes jutting out until you have a shape your happy with it. then raise the pillars and wireframe with log. Since you seem to be doing more of a tudor house and since I don't really practice in that style im not familiar with the planning and thought process behind it. Another issue with frame and shape I see is sort of repetitive patterns (Eg. the frame symmetry on one wall). I would recommend breaking up the pattern every once in a while which can help especially with larger builds. the windows are a bit awkwardly placed imho and could do with some windowsills or something. other than that I recommend little other than common sense building techniques (such as depth, which for some reason Tudor houses seem to lack) and practice.

    Sorry if was too harsh

Oh you’re fine, that was pretty helpful. I appreciate it.

That’s what’s also weird about my building style; I like symmetry too much. Idk why, though I do see what you mean.

I love the sheer simplicity of the builds, really good actually for someone who's just gotten back into building.

I would strongly recommend a mod called conquest reforged. Its a mod with 5000 + 3D models and blocks and is very good for making your build come to life. I would strongly reconmend that you try it out, because what is limiting you seems to be the amount and variety of blocks in vanilla.
