'The Chopped Stick'

 

I head on in, seeing what the business is like.

 

Walking inside it looks run down.
Old tables, old flooring, holes in the ceiling, you name it.

There is a bartender though.
"Welcome. Have a seat.. blad blah blah."
He doesn't seem too happy.

 

“You seem upset.”
I state the obvious, taking a seat.

 

"You would be too if you were in my place."

 

“How’s that?”

 

"This Inn is doing as great as I thought it would. I won't go into much detail."

 

"I'm here to talk to people, might as well hear your story."
I take another sip of my flask.

 

"When I was 30 or something, I wanted to open an inn. So.. I collected enough money and eventually I bought this place. It used to look better though. I hired some people to help me pour drinks and serve customers. It went really well in the beginning, but as the years passed, lesser people started to show up. It was foolish of me to start an inn on an island such as this one, and now I'm stuck with this old dump."

 

"Hmm. Not many come around here, I presume?"

 

"Nowadays it's usually those from the town itself. But there used to come many travellers and merchants here, looking for coin or trade."

 

I'mma feed the birdies either until something happens or a third of the bread is gone.

 

Understood.

 

“What happened? Bandits ‘r something?”

 

"No, just unlucky. People lost interest, merchants and travellers rarely visit anymore. So yeah.."

 

"I mean, do they rarely visit because of bandits?"

 

"No, not because of bandits. Fewer people care to take the trip from Manchot to here. The trip is too expensive or they are too scared to go onto the seas on their own. The only folk who visit every now and then are the traders sent by Manchot to buy our wood and such."

 

"Oh. Well... have you heard anything about bandits?"

 

"Uh.. no I haven't. Not in this town."
