Should Profanity Be Taken As Seriously As It Is?

"Bad words" shouldn't really be considered to be bad. The word "DumbShit" essentially has no meaning other than being an insult. Same with the word midget, which just means "Small/short/little human".

 

No because in the end they're just words. As long as you don't use them to seriously insult someone I'm okay with it.

”Midget” as you explained above is one, and ”bastard” means an illegimite child (Possible legal term)

Just depends on context. Obviously if you spam someone to insult them then don’t be surprised if they block you. Though if you’re alone, and you fall down or lose a video game, then I don’t care if you cuss quietly. In public, however, (especially around kids), you shouldn’t.

So as long as you’re alone or you’re with friends that don’t care, then go for it. If not, then don’t.

 

As long as people don't go like "F*ck! Sh*t! As*!" For no reason or just as excessive insult, I'm fine with a bit of swearing.

 

There's a difference between swearing and cursing. Shouldn't really do either.

 

Words are completely arbitrary and their meaning is entirely derived by their context and use. Hence how new and old words re-emerge and change.

As for how those particular words changed, I’m not quite sure. In older literature, they tend to stay clear of profanity, so there would probably be no mention of homosexuality at all. Even saying a women was pregnant was considered profane such as in the book The Awakening.

 

I agree with the concept of words having no meaning without context and us giving them meaning. Personally, I don't exactly mind swearing, but just to to tell a personal story, the first time I saw swearing on the server was a bit shocking.

I wasn't saying that people should call babies assholes. I am just saying that I believe it is ok to swear when you are mad and things like that. I could agree with you that people who swear all the time for no reason are very annoying.
