they dont serve purpose in the game
their drops are shit
the excuse for them to appear is poor

You mean the ones at Twain? They're literally normal-strength enemies. They have normal health, they move relatively slowly, their element affinities aren't anything to write home about...what's so bad about them?

Apparently they're sky mobs that attack people that haven't slept for three days in the game

first of all this mob attacks you because you didnt sleep in 3 days, how is this bad? well it is the most unnatural and forced way ive seen of giving beds a purpose other than being a checkpoint, they could have added a sleep bar that, as it gets lower, your stats also get lower, it looks natural and makes sense
you might think, "Well it makes sense, if you dont sleep you are physically weaker, right?" well no, sleeping in minecraft doesnt give any buff, neither gives any debuffs not sleeping, so its not a fair excuse

and it doesnt help that it deals literally 5 hearts of damage with full iron armor, while also attacks in groups
also lots of people seem to say this mob breaks half the farms, which doesnt help at all
and you might think, "Well they probably drop cool stuff dont they?"
Yeah... they drop some weird scale to repair elytra, which is a garbage drop, considering how rare are elytra and how the first thing you would do with a mending book is apply it to your elytra

oh and they also break some gamemodes, an example is Skyblock
in skyblock you dont get a bed until you are a bit advanced on it, and this mob just makes skyblock nights impossible

they are literally a more aggresive, mass-attacking vex that spawns for no apparent reason other than being alive for more than 3 days in a row

Either way, they really don't seem that bad. I know it's a dumb thing for me to say since I've never fought them, but from observation alone they really don't seem that bad. They add a mob that is actually a decent challenge, and people complain? Though to be fair, I can understand the insomnia mechanic making people a little antsy... I think it's pretty cool but it could be done a little better in my opinion...

Anyway, even after 3 sleepless days, it says they still apparently spawn at night. So what makes them any different from any other hostile mob that spawns at night? Other than that they're not immediate of a threat. Maybe I've been playing the AoA mod too much... If you think Phantoms are bad you should see Scrubbies.

by the time you get elytra you should already get access to a villager that gives mending books, making it useless

They seem ok, but the ‘no sleep in 3 days’ rule is really going to be annoying, especially in my survival world where we never sleep to farm mobs in the night. But oh well, more mobs to farm!

you wouldnt like a mob that is literally a vex with physical body
except that the less you sleep, the more they spawn at once and that they can also change size with cmd blocks apparently
i fucking hope these things dont get size changing in the future like if they were slimes

Yeah, they're pretty horrible.

 

I personally feel as though the general idea of phantoms is good, though the implementation was terrible.

 

Phantoms could of been an end city, neutral mob or something but no, rip.

 

I think they're very cool and I very much like them. They're pretty scary and are a good challenge at first, but they're really easy to kill with a bow or a trident
