Community Event Curing Cancer: Let's Pick A New Name!

So, the results of the poll of whether or not we should change Cancer's name are in...and they're in favor of changing Cancer's name and adding in a new Cancer more fitting to the zodiac elsewhere.

Now, let it be known that this should not open up any floodgates or herald a change in how we go about making our items. The fact that Cancer was part of a specific "set" of items, in this case the Zodiac items, is one of the primary reasons for the change; it was tasteless for referring to those under that star sign and isn't indicative of other changes in the future. It had been complained about near-constantly to me and a number of folks in the mod team pretty much since Gavel came out, so don't expect more changes like this to happen often.

Unlike items such as Cardiac Arrest or Asphyxia, Cancer is an extremely hot-button topic due to its shared name with the zodiac sign and it was just in poor taste to have been made like it was, though Salted went ahead with it despite my warnings. It's a relief being able to fix it now.

So, back to the point at hand, Cancer's name needs to be changed. However, the team decided that the originally-planned name, Jormungandr, was a bit too obscure to use for this.

And I figured, since the community voted on whether to change it or not, I'd let the community decide which name we use!

Note that this isn't like the item naming contests; we've come up with a handful of names that you'll be allowed to vote on and pick between instead, as well as some justifications for why we chose each name. Read them carefully and pick your favorites on the poll, please!


Pestilence:
- Pestilence is just a good, general poison name since it can refer to any kind of disease, epidemic or otherwise.
- It's easy, since the lore of the item won't have to change much.


Hood of Mamba:
- Black Mambas are extremely deadly and poisonous snakes.
- Black Mambas have fake cobra hoods for intimidation purposes, hence the name of the item.
- Black Mambas bite quickly and repeatedly to ensure their venom takes hold, befitting the attack speed buff.


Recluse:
- Brown Recluse Spiders are an extremely poisonous type of spider.
- The main idea stems from the new lore, intended to play up for a creepiness factor.
- The "helmet" is a parasitic spider that burrows into your head. You as its host spread its toxic young to provide food for it rather than traditionally attacking.


Toxoplasmosis:
- Toxoplasma Gondii is a parasite that alters the brain chemistry of their host(particularly rats, but humans have displayed effects too). The sickness from the infection is called Toxoplasmosis.
- It fits in with the same idea of a parasite as Recluse.
- Mind-altering effects embody the general change in strategy that comes with equipping the helmet - focusing all of your capabilities in damage-over-time via poison.


Necrosis:
- General condition of death of a lot of cells in certain organs or tissues, due to various factors.
- The idea is that it's about the nature of the corruption and zombies.


Necrosis, despite being a throwaway that we put in last-minute on the poll, seems to have won the day with 129 votes. As stated, there will be a new helmet called Cancer to make sure we keep a full Zodiac lineup, but don't worry to those who own a Cancer; you'll have the same item as always, it'll just be called something different.

Keep in mind that people will probably still call it cancer, and the new cancer, new cancer. Pestilance seems generic tho but the best one out of the options for me.

 

I like toxoplasmosis because I have no idea what it means but it sounds cool

 

I like Recluse better. Not to say the other names are bad, they just don't work for me. Recluse makes sense, for me anyway, because of the spiders. And I do love the theory behind the naming as well.

Pestilence is a great name :)

 

All the names were cool, but in the end I voted for Necrosis and Hood of Mamba.

- Pestilence feels a bit to simple namewise? I don't know why, it just doesn't seem grand enough for an item with 3000 poison, but that might just be me.
- Recluse is an interesting idea lore-wise, but when I hear the name, the idea of being alone comes before the idea of a spider.
- Toxoplasmosis is pretty cool but I would be too lazy to type out "Selling 3689 Poison Toxoplasmosis"

Necrosis has a simple name that seems to get the job done, and I like how it could tie in with the corruption. Hood of Mamba seems to perfectly fit the item, the only criticism I can think of is that it sounds a tiny bit similar to "Shawl of Gaea", but that's a really minor one.

 

Yeah I know, I'm saying that I picked that for that reason BEFORE I read the explanation lol

 

Recluse and Necrosis are both short and evocative, 10/10

 

I mean the whole thing with Pestilence is that it not only is what the Bubonic Plague can be referred to as (though it's also used for any epidemic disease), which gives it in some ways a greater advantage in this aspect.
