I'm following the discription of the monster from the book it is in. And the book says it hates humans, half elves and elves. And you're the only person that's in one of those groups. Also I didn't want to target you too bad and Aasimar look like humans so Kyelas also got attacked.

For your second question, I have 2 answers, the first being that if you didn't see them it would've been a surprise attack, so seeing them gave you an advantage. Seeing your enemy also gave you the option to do something about them. But you didn't do that.

 

Because we obviously know on first sight that they are our enemies.

So, obviously, the first thing we should have done is attack them.

That's supposed to mean what, exactly?

My issue with this is that the successful perception checks didn't avert anything. The animals didn't really look hostile, they just suddenly attacked, and somehow got a surprise round even though they clearly didn't surprise us. The least you could do would've been to not give them a surprise round, and just do normal initiative instead.

 

I said they weren't normal animals becuase their bird deer.
I had NO IDEA they were hostile if anything I thought they would be freindly!

For the bird-things to somehow surprise us by flying down a mountain and attacking while we could see them, they would have to have a fly speed of something like 500 ft. per round, and that’s just ridiculous.

Well, we don't know what kind of animal they are by nature.
If they are hostile by nature, they could just attack out of nowhere when they see a chance.

 

He's blatantly ignoring the rules for how surprise attacks work.

This is what I'll do, while they dive down you get to do something before they get their attacks. Is that good?
