i have 2 water x catalysts and an un id'd leggings, then walk over to the appropriate transmutation merchant.

That unided item description is misleading. What you actually need is 2 catalysts and one item from the specific element hive shop.
Its basically just an exchange merchant. If you bought something but want something else from that same element you can get a new item there.

 

um thats not how it works....
you need to have the actual item (trench scourer i think) or whatever it is that you bought using ur original water voucher....

As they said:

Once you complete each stage of the quest, you receive a voucher to purchase the item from the shop. IF you don't like the item, you can go to the exchange merchant and exchange it with that item.

first of all why do people reply legit quoting people who already answered the question just to say yea do this?
second not having finished the quest doesnt actually matter you just need the item you got from the voucher (to clarify)

so, IMO no you didn't answer the question. I decided I should also post for more clarity. Yes you said that they need trench scourer to get the voucher from the exchange merchant, and yes Lord_He1mchen said that it's an exchange merchant that accepts 2 tokens and the specific item. Somehow both of you missed the important part:

This person needs to be explicitly told what the problem is, not given a slightly more accurate description of the merchants :p .
Again, you need to complete each stage of the quest to receive vouchers, then use those vouchers to purchase items. If you get an item you don't like or need to swap it for another, you can use the transmutation merchant to get the necessary token back.

get diamond hydro ring if you really need 2 mana instead of 1. Then use suppression and another item that has +ms too. Then you'll counter the -ms and get all the mr. EZ

The tldr breakdowns:
Thunder Merchant Items can't be worn together.
Air Merchant Items can't be worn together.
Earth Merchant Items can't be worn together.
Water Merchant Items can't be worn together.
Fire Merchant Items can't be worn together.
Master Merchant Items can't be worn together.

This means: You can wear only 1 piece of armor/accessory from each division.
Example: You can wear soulflare and trench scourer. (1 Fire and 1 Water Piece)
Example: You cannot wear Anima-Infused and Hephestus-Forged. (2xMaster Pieces)
Example: You cannot wear Moon Pool and Moon Pool. (2xWater Pieces)
Example: You can wear Breezehands and Coral Ring. (1 Air and 1 Water Piece)

 

i mean it kinda was? he1mchen said you needed to of the catalysts and an item of the appropriate element. considering he already has a hive item its obvious he knows how to get them
anyway its kinda just i dont like it when people point out obvious things like that cuz (i think) it makes them sound like theyre trying to mind flex on people and (i think) it implies whoever theyre talking to is dumb

I don't like mind flexing either, but helping people play the game is important. If they have a question, I'll tell them everything that's necessary, but that's just me.
