Quickly deal with this guy's weapon (or focus on taking as little damage as possible if I'm too slow to react to the strike, in which case, attempt disarming and knocking him unconscious after the hit) before checking back on the mage's condition.
If he's still in fighting condition, knock him out, then do the following.
If he isn't in fighting condition, take his book, then go back to Valkas and continue defending him.

 

Is he trying to attack me or Xia (I'm assuming that he's attacking me, but still I just want to make sure)

Also, I thought of another flaw for myself
I want everyone that I care about to view me as a hero, but if it's someone I don't know/care about I don't care about what they think now time for the story

Spoiler: Story

This was before I was turned into a werewolf when people weren't scared of me and I still had friends. While I and some other children from my neighborhood were just playing on the street and having fun. I remember playing a game of tag with my friends when a man approached, I thought nothing of it since people walk through town a lot, but he didn't just go past us like other adults he approached one of the girls from our group and said something about her being cute and wanting to spend time with her. She, of course, didn't know him and told him to get away, not like that would stop him. He grabbed her hand and told everyone to scram if they want her to live. Most kids ran, but I was a fool tried running at him and punch him, that didn't go out so well because he was way stronger than me. Nonetheless, he let the girl go and now he was focused on beating me up and teaching me a lesson to do as I'm told. I remember getting beaten up badly before the guards showed up. It was the girl that the man had grabbed who called the guards, and she thanked me for saving her from the attacker. That feeling of being a hero felt really good, but even so, I know I wouldn't have done it if I didn't know her

He lunged in your direction. If you move, Xia gets hit (probably). If you don't move, you get hit (probably).

Well Xia is the only person I'd call my friend for now so I just stand and somhow try to catch the sword with my hands
