This is due to a vagary of the old system. See, the level cap used to be Lv 75, and even before that 70. So, the basic armour had different levels, and a different method of scaling, with armour tiers scaling up approximately every 15 levels(though Diamond approached a bit early at Lv 57).

When the Gavel update came around, we needed more basic items to fill the gaps, and I happened to have a plan to have "sets" of basic armour, five for each level with scaling modifiers. However, to prevent older players getting screwed over, we kept in the old basic armour as well, which leads to the awkwardness of having a random Diamond chestplate at Lv 57, in the throes of Chainmail, and...well, this.

 

next, we will add a broken chain helmet with 3000 health, since more holes = more health

 

Cheese has holes, more cheese means more holes. So, more cheese=more holes=less cheese

 

That's actually a fallacy; despite the cheese getting more holes in it the more cheese there is, you do still end up with overall more cheese, as the amount of space the holes take up becomes less of the cheese's overall mass as it grows since the holes are generally the same size and are put in unevenly. If the cheese to hole ratio were to remain constant, it wouldn't be able to hold its shape.

It’s not like people actually wore basic armor, especially since merchants sold higher tier armor in the Gavel update.

 

Fixed that for you. We had to cater to everyone else too, y'know.

 

Out of all my early play throughs of the game, I rarely, if ever, wore normal items. It’s extremely easy to get a unique set of armor or even a rare set just through grinding. By mid game I’m usually wearing an almost full set of rares and legendaries. You don’t have to be level 75 or have multiple classes to be able to easily find and wear items that aren’t normal.

You overestimate some players, especially back then when finding uniques or rares wasn't as common. Before you started -getting- your gear, you'd actually have to do some purchasing from shops to keep yourself up in the first while, especially in my experience and surely others'

 

I guess, but it literally took between 5 to 10 minutes through grinding zombies around Ragni to get a full set of uniques. Even if it was harder to get higher tiers b4 Gavel, it still doesn’t matter because anyone could quickly and easily get a set of uniques after Gavel launched. Look I’m just saying that you don’t have to worry about players getting screwed over normal armor. Not the end of the world, just less worry for you.

 

Also mind that there's more than a few more items -to- find at that level, saturating the drop pool more, and you're entirely correct that it was much more difficult to get uniques or rares before Gavel happened, so many people did end up utilizing basic armour for good long amounts of time.

 

And then there's me, who's legitimately never used normal tier items higher than level 11.

Actually, huh. This thread convinced me to take a closer look at normal items and there's a lot of issues here besides the awkward names...


These helmets are the same level, with the same health, but one has a powder slot and the other doesn't. Does it only have the slot because of the name? These helmets are supposed to be identical in power!


These chestplates are different levels, but they have the same health? There's no extra powder slots or anything to justify this, the chain chestplate just has less health than it should.


These helmets are identical in level and slots, but one has more health than the other! These are supposed to be identical to each other, and even if one was supposed to be stronger because of the name (which it shouldn't) it would be the refined helmet, not the unfinished one!

There's a lot of these cases that need to be fixed, cause normal items are apparently a lot more messed up than just the names.
