I take my blade, sheath it, and hand him the book as I walk out of the cell.

 

Electricity seems to only affect his merfolk form - deoxygenating the water seems to be the best way to impair him, but that only slows him down at most.


“Don’t worry, I’m not mad. Retirement’s easier, anyways. I just wish Aj told me he had someone earlier.”

Anne smiles.
“Well, shall we take a look?”

“Thanks. How many’d you do?”

 

“A lot. I’d call them easy, but having something close to a computer as a brain helps.”

 

Artemis keeps reading, looking for weaknesses and strengths.


"Well, uhm...I believe it may have been for my own and his protection, Detective Alice." The royal Shadow says.

 

Strengths include extreme resilience, nullmagic immunity, and the ability to rewrite runes and charms in Leviathan form; then raw magic manipulation, elemental affinity modifications, and thought manipulation in merfolk form.


"You guys have Eve for that, don't you? Besides, I do have a pretty big I-told-you-so card on the whole mimic issue. What, it was a year since I quit and my complaints to the king went ignored?" She says, rolling her eyes. "Anyhow, no, your job's your job. Now I have proof you're good at it, and I don't care about trying to take your position."

"If I had anything more difficult, I would've given it to you." Mel shrugs.

 

Artemis spends a while thinking, before summoning a pencil and paper and beginning to write and draw.


"Eve is meant to be used scarcely. She's not something we use whenever we can." The royal Shadow says.

Eve seems to be watching from across the room.

 

"It's alright. It let me pass the time well."

 

Ihra looks over her shoulder.


Alice nods.
"Yeah, figured. Anyhow, unless she's here to execute me or something, I'm heading home."

"So... I'm heading to bed, but you're free to mess around."

 

Artemis seems to be drafting ideas for an assault with humans, though the style of writing seems to alternate between two different styles.


"Have a safe journey, Detective Alice." The royal Shadow says.

 

"Got any recommendations?"
I ask as I start to leave.

 

"Yeah, let's go inside."

He and Anne enter Arga's shop.

 

"Aj, couldn't you just write your own ideas?"


Alice nods.
"Thanks."
She approaches Eve.
"You're not here to dispatch me, are you?"

 

"What's wrong with us working together?" Artemis asks as she writes.


"I'm here to protect the thrones while Aj and Stephanie are out." Eve says.

 

Arga's waiting at the counter.
"Well, I see you've discovered your popularity here."

"Keep your sword sheathed. Something that shiny will attract a lot of questions."

"It looks like you're writing two different plans."


Alice nods before being twisted into a warp point and vanishing.
"Well... where would be a good place for me to stay for the time being?" Miorah asks, a bit confused.

 

"We're drafting ideas. Gathering an army of humans to fight may be a good idea, but how we'll do it and what we'll do is the difficult part." Artemis says.


"You can stay in the one of the guest rooms if you'd like." the royal Shadow offers.

 

"Apparently. Didn't know you were that populair either."

 

Ihra sighs.


"If that isn't too much trouble, I'd appreciate that... I don't have anything to give in return, at the moment."

"I'm not. I'm just the only one."

 

"What's the matter, Ihra?" Artemis asks, looking at Ihra.


"That's fine. If Tenebrae sent you here, I'm sure she wouldn't be happy if we sent you away without completing your goal." the royal Shadow says.

 

"Idhaenna isn't particularly fond of us, and she's our best chance at breaking O'rogal."


Miorah pauses, then nods.
"I appreciate it, really. I'm sure we'll find some way to repay you... Well, most of us. There's one that... might have problems doing anything right now."
