I think that first we need to find a way to guarantee finding them on a single story with 6 levels and only left/right movement.

 

already solved that, it is very similar to a video on a cat in the box problem



In short terms, to find them on one level is the following pattern: 2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2
(this is just them moving randomly left and right)

ill explain how i got mai answer if it helps anybody

Then, i realized the problem about the thieves was just a cat and box problem, but two way
so wat i then did is not only followed the pattern 2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2, in the apartments, but in the floors as well whenever the thief moved floors

the other reason why it doesnt exactly follow the pattern (you might see 3 fives in there) is to acccount for that when the thief moves up and down, he doesnt move left/right, so only the floor changes

The only reason it fails is because of the moving up or down factor, if we're able to somehow locate what floor they're on, and it's floor 6 or 1 (if we say they just moved there) we can use this strategy in the end, as we know they'll move from floor 1 to 2, and 6 to 5, which means the areas we did not check in 1 or 6 can be checked in 2 or 5 (speaking if we went and checked apartment 2, then 3, then 4, then they move up/down and we'd know they're not in apartment 4, meaning if we check 2 and they're not there, they were in apartment 6, and so they'll be in apartment 5 the next day and get them) But this only works if we ever are able to locate even or odd (meaning if we locate the starting area we can figure it out) and if we locate what floor they're on (they needed to move up to 6 or down to 1)

 

yeah, but we can find what floor they're on by doing the 2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2 but with the floors instead

this is basically what would happen if we continued the pattern of 2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2 throughout the apartments while every 4th day (which is the day that the thief moves floors) i also move my floor of search, so i do 2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2 with the floors

but for someone reason it still fails :/

So thanks for the hint. Now we use that sequence for the floors and for the apartments.

So first floor 2 apartments 2,3,4,5 then apartment 3 apartments 2,3,4,5 and so on in the floors 2,3,4,5,5,4,3,2. Now all odd apartment starts have been eliminated.

So let’s do the even ones now, which means searching the apartments in the sequence 5,4,3,2. Same sequence for the floor search.

The whole thing will take 4*16 days which is 64days. (Tf I wrote 64 3 days ago when guessing)

if i am at floor 4 room 4 and make my way to floor 3 room 5, then i am in room 5 and you search 2, then i'm in room 4 and you search room 3, then i'm in room 3 and you searched 4, and then room 2 and you search room 5 and then i go down, then you missed me
and then i'm in the wrong floor you search when you search floor 5-2 back
i can do the same with the room 5432 pattern of yours

Day 1, choose the 2nd floor in the 2nd room.
Day 2, choose the room to the right, 2nd floor 3rd room.
Day 3, choose 2nd floor 4th room.
Day 4, choose the room above and to the right. 3rd floor room 5.
Day 5, choose the room to the left. 3rd floor room 4.
Repeat this cycle and once you reach floor 5, start going down doing the same cycle.

Then go to appartment 2 and camp there until day 24
At day 25 i'm back at appartment 3 on floor 2
But you are searching on floor 3
Then i just have to move a floor up on day 29 and you are searching on the wrong floor then

I might have used it wrong, so let me change it slightly.
Welp Sorry - I did that real fast without any thought put into it.

So when the thief moves on one floor he moves 3 moves which means he moves either from even -> odd or from odd -> even during that entire floor.
So then when searching for even starting number (and floor) the police has to search
Floor 2: 2,3,4,5.
Floor 3: 5,4,3,2.
Floor 4: 2,3,4,5.
Floor 5: 5,4,3,2.
Then the thief will be caught using an even starting number and even floor number.

Now similar patterns for odd apartment and even floor.
So let's start over with Floor 2.

Floor 2: 5,4,3,2
Floor 3: 2,3,4,5
Floor 4: 5,4,3,2
Floor 5: 2,3,4,5

Now the thief will be caught when he starts on an even floor.

So now let's cover when the thiefs starts on an odd floor.
Using the same pattern as before this means starting at floor 5.

For finding odd apartment odd floor start:

Floor 5: 5,4,3,2
Floor 4: 2,3,4,5
Floor 3: 5,4,3,2
Floor 2: 2,3,4,5

Then to find for even apartment and odd floor start:

Floor 5: 2,3,4,5
Floor 4: 5,4,3,2
Floor 3: 2,3,4,5
Floor 2: 5,4,3,2

Now the thieves will be caught when combining these 4 patterns. And combinding them is just adding them onto each other since the start number and and number will be odd when the starting is odd and even when the starting is even.

And for the floors works as well.

After 16*4 days. Might be that there's a quicker way to get 100 though.
