You are the police, so if you search random, then the police moves random

You have to come up with a sequence for the police to follow, so they have a 100% chance of finding them in the least possible days

'The question is: what is the least possible days where the police has a 100% success chance of finding the thieves.
You must answer with the amount of days which sequence of searching they follow.' This basically means 'In the worst possible case scenario, what is the least number of days the police can find the thieves.' The worst case scenario would be if the thieves keep moving to rooms that the police aren't searching, and that this goes on forever. So, the answer is infinite.

I am very confused... Explain a few things please:

    1. What is my goal?
    2. Do I decide the police pattern?
    3. The police cant have a 100% chance I think... they only have 3 tries before they switch floor and there are 6 aparatments (and thats only if the police guessed the right floor)

    There is a solution
    1. Your goal is to create a sequence where the police get a 100% of finding the thieves
    2. Yes you do
    3. There is a solution

If i were to post some tips or other small things i've found (don't know the answer) here for others would that be okay, of course not getting any of the prize money in that case, just thought this would be more of a community event rather than a solo person ^^

here's a rough drawing of what the situation looks like.

    Screen Shot 2018-05-26 at 10.37.32 AM.png

based on this one out of the 5 days they have a 100% chance of finding the culprits.

    My answer is 1 day.

    Thank you.

Well all i've found and a good rule of thumb is that they can only be in the same apartment twice before needing to move up or down.
If they start in an odd apartment, they alternate between odd days in 1 3 and 5 and even days in 2 4 and 6, and as soon as they move up or down a floor it's even numbers of days in 1 3 and 5 and odd in 2 4 and 6, and if they start in an even number you just reverse the process.
While yes i know this may be easily calculated with math, if you can figure out which area they start in (by some means) you can limit 3 apartments each day, which only means 18 floors needs to be searched, not sure if it's to some help.

If you're the person that prefers pictures over words i made a small example of what i mean, the filled in square is the starting area, and then the numbers indicate what day and potential apartments they can be in (for confusion sake i only went down, so the higher floors are single numbers, and i went to 20 so the 1 in the starting room means the first day, not the 13th)
And uh don't judge my drawing skillz, they're over 9000 i know xD

I know, that's why the 1 aka the first day is in the same room they began, unless they start in a room, then move and then the police can search
