I suppose a one level difference doesn't matter too much, but more than that and it starts getting a bit concerning.

And of all people, this party has methods of communication that he could use

 

I lightly brush against his mind with telepathy, just to see if he notices.

 

He raises an eyebrow, and looks concerned.

"Please, do not fear. I only wanted to see if you could hear me in this way."

 

He nods.

He closes his eyes and looks like he’s trying to concentrate on something, but then realizes it’s not working and sighs

 

I give him a questioning look.

 

Anafenza is petting Dorghalan, I guess.

 

He was trying to communicate back to you, but your telepathy is 1-way

He pulls out some paper and ink.

"Can you write what you were trying to tell me?"

 

He writes.

“Welcome travelers. My name is Zilt Quath. I am on my way to the City of Daggers. Who might you all be?”

 

Anafenza: "My name is Anafenza. I'm a mercenary my... acquaintance here (she gestures to Natasha) hired to act as a bodyguard."

 

The man nods, waiting for the others to respond
