Recently, the Chinese Communist Party on Sunday proposed changing the country’s constitution to allow Xi to remain in power beyond his scheduled departure in 2023. The party will vote on the proposal — which would abolish term limits by removing the phrase that says China’s president and vice president “shall serve no more than two consecutive terms” — in March. Here’s the link to the full article:

To me, this isn’t that surprising given how nationalist Jinping is. Unfortunately for some Chinese and us, China will continue to crack down on human rights and become more aggressive in the South China Sea. What do you guys think Jinping will do?

Imo he will establish a more totalitarian rule that will oppress the masses until a civil war will have to take place.

Idk, the victorious don’t receive judgement. Especially for Syria’s president, he’s about to win his civil war and he killed children and targeted hospitals with chemical weapons...

China has been doing really well in recent years, however all things come to an end.
I think this move is risky, since any huge mistake will be immediately blamed on him.

I think that depends upon who you ask. But it is indeed risky though. I remember in the Wall Street Journal that Xi already purged some military officials, so he might not have that much opposition.

My question is, assuming Mao actually does rule for life, and continues his trend of making the government more centered on himself, what happens when he dies?

You can kind of view this in two different ways.

Those in support of Xi’s rule and the CCP will allow for him to remain in power. His officials have recently been starting to crack down on internal corruption, and the many mega projects the country is embarking on will drastically change the quality of life for many Chinese citizens. China is also currently waging a war on poverty, with aims to eliminate most, if not all, poverty within 30-40 years IIRC. China is indeed doing pretty well for the past decades, but at the cost of the society’s welfare :)

Abolishing the Presidency term limits is a bad move on the CCP’s part. No vote, no plebiscite was held to listen to the views of the public. Cracking down on the South China Sea, advancement of military technology, the country’s top leader can rule for an unspecified amount of time...it becomes an issue since China is a major player in global trade, finance, and other matters. The government rules the country with an iron fist. Whatever policies Xi makes, whatever beneficial or harmful goals he has in mind, would remain unchanged until he is out of power. They are still envisioning the “China Dream”, after all. So until a successful attempted coup or a civil war (the latter more unlikely) removes him out of power, he runs a semi-authoritarian state.

I highly doubt they will eliminate poverty. The U.S., the “land of the free,” has been trying since the 60s and they haven’t fully solved it. Any authoritarian regime does not and cannot have the people’s best interests because they don’t depend on the people to stay in power. That’s why in places like Nigeria and Saudi Arabia the government stays in power because they rely only on resources like oil or they resort to cronyism, even though most of the people are disenfranchised.

To be fair, we've been actively putting policies in place that benefit the rich, but that's besides the point

You could say that about a lot of laws and lobbying, but if democracies like the US were like China, then human rights wouldn’t be protected at all like the freedom of speech

This will end in a military coup.

The communist party of china is similar to the bolsheviks. They don't care about workers as long as they have power in the new regime.
