"I've looked through the blueprints already. It didn't mean much to me, because even I don't know the intricacies of making one of me."

 

"If that's the case.. then yes. Guess I do."

 

"No, you don't have the tech. Your magic is a few levels below our tech equivalents, but the basics are there, of course." She rambles. "Anyhow, I doubt you can find anyone that will be used to starforging, but I'm sure you can make a less powerful version of the mech. Just, keep in mind you'll have to hope the engineers that made Eve can make even more ground. She's an interesting push towards a new tech level, but using an AI-linked soul should be what you need to develop more powerful automated routines."

At least, hopefully it works that way with him.

"I thought you knew how you worked."

 

"Very little of her is AI, really." Shadow Stephanie says.

 

"That's sort of my point. EBB's personality is what you get when you skimp on AI here. Half of the pilots you talked to here are full-on robots. Not too many biological things out here, the black hole tends to get to them. Or moving parts, or electric shock, or lack of oxygen, or unideal conditions... you get the point."

 

"Personally I hated the full-AI robots we made in the past. Too...inhuman." Shadow Stephanie says.

 

"Gotta hope."

 

"Such is the problem with more primitive AI. EBB is... aggravating most of the time. There was a glitch in its code, and that made him decide that if something can't move or react and has increased surface area, it's easier to scan. It also quickly had an affinity for unneccesarily heavy armaments, so... it doesn't have any surviving coders. And I'm stuck with the silly bee the way it is. I still wish I could reprogram him to speak a bit less like a straight robot, but it's not like it'll let me bring it back in the techlab without wrecking everything again."

"Oh, I've no clue. I can feel where some vitals are, and I know my limits, but nothing else."

 

"Oh... I wonder why they didn't let you know more than that. Wouldn't you get curious after a while?"

 

"Yes, and they didn't let us know because it's a problem if the thing you're trying to keep alive knows the best way to kill itself."

 

"...Is it really that bad being a robot?"

 

"It's boring. Very, very boring. We'll come across the robot rooms eventually, but we weren't allowed out of our rooms much."

 

"I wonder why... that doesn't make much sense to me."

 

"I think it was Sasha's choice. Sasha's one of the lead scientists who worked here. You'll see her body at the entrance."

 

"Do it for the children." He laughs.

 

"That explains a lot." Shadow Stephanie says.

 

"EBB never has less than twelve pieces of heavy weaponry that really should be reserved for mechs. So... EBB let me upgrade it for that and I slid in a priority override that it somehow disabled initially."

Well, people care about children.

"Did she call all the shots about you?"

 

"Yes. We do."
