So, as a person who lingers on YT often, I was interested when I saw a animated show that I never heard before hit #1 trending. As of me typing this, its still trending. The show was RWBY, and apparently had just concluded their 5th volume. I watched the the first few episodes of the first volume, but so far it hasn't stuck w/ me. The art style is definitely unique(but not a problem for me), the story seems alright, and the characters aren't the worst so far, but can be kind of annoying at times. The humor, however, is really not for me. I'm just looking for any opinions from people out there who have seen the show. More specifically, why I should watch it or why it probably isn't for me. I tried to find a good review out there, but they're pretty outdated, unorganized, or incomplete.

    Oboy...

    Let's see.

My opinion on the first two volumes is... mixed. The animation quality was pretty shoddy, plotlines felt rather hackneyed, and most of the characters/acting were a bit annoying, but it also had some of the series' best scenes as far as action and choreography are concerned. In short, you watch these volumes for the action, and to have a feel of what's going on, not really for a deep and engaging plot.

Volume 3 is probably the strongest of the five, IMO. It actually starts to develop some plot and character dynamics, the animation gets better, and the last few episodes packed an emotional punch. My biggest critique of volume 3 would be the lack of good villains. The "main villain" is edgy and clichéd as heck, and
the more interesting villain characters are bumped off despite being fan favorites.

Volume 4 is where things get... interesting. The animation quality improves by leaps and bounds, and the whole show starts to become more plot-oriented and character driven, with less focus on huge beat-em-up style scenes. The story is overall decent, but again often strays dangerously close to tropes and clichés, and still has issues establishing well-motivated antagonists. Additionally, I feel like the voice acting is... meh. It was fine back when the show was light-hearted and action centered, but now that they're actually trying to tell a story with it, some of the line delivery doesn't really measure up. Overall, though, it was still a pretty solid volume.

Volume 5 is probably the most controversial among fans. Action scenes (which many view as the show's strongest point) have been severely cut down on, in favor of trying to depict characters in a more human way. This works in theory but in practice leads to episodes that feel borderline filler, with a lot of brooding and very little plot development. The few action scenes included don't really have the same flair of the first three seasons... they seem to be going for a more realistic approach, which in an animated show just ends up looking kind of strange and clunky. Over-the-top combat acrobatics are one of the things that made the show so popular in the first place, and sidelining them makes it feel like something is... missing, if that makes sense.

Finally, as a random thought, probably the most consistently good part of the show for me has been its soundtrack.

Anyway, that's just my late-night ramblings. Don't take anything said here too seriously, it's all just my opinions.

Thanks for the input. I thinking I might just hold off on the series until maybe Volume 6 or something. The story doesn't seem that interesting and the world is kinda iffy. Plus, they kinda failed to established how the world worked as far as how deep I am in the first volume, which is probably really stupid to say.

The action is probably where I have mixed feelings about the show. Not the biggest fan of over the top stuff, though it could be pretty fun to watch at times. I personally like shows that are a tad bit consistency w/ fight scenes (there are a few exceptions like fun factor story).

    Also bump.

Story in volume 1 and 2 is pretty... eh, I agree. As for the world, after the first few seasons they started a mini-series that goes into a lot of detail about the world and it's history and stuff.

    Just a thought.

I first watched it when it came out in Season 3. To be honest, the first season art looked awful, and the story was choppy. But, when you hit the season 3 point.. Animation gets a bit better, story becomes neater. And then, Season 4 and 5.. Story is a lot better, and the art is BEAUTIFUL! The Soundtrack's good as hell, too.

So, my verdict: Go on and watch it! If you aren't a big fan of it, even in Seasons 3-5, I totally get it! Everyone has different tastes.

Music's pretty good and has somewhat improved over the last few volumes, but the lack of combat as @Paradoxical said has been watered down extremely since volume 1 and this is likely the cause of the death of the creator of Monty Oum. I'd say watch if you have the time to or if you're bored as heck, but don't force yourself to watch it, Volume 1 is mostly full of 4 minute episodes except the first and last two episodes.
But if you do happen t0 hold off the series until Volume 6, it may take a long time to be released since Volume 5 ended only the start of this year so Volume 6 probably won't be out until extremely late this year or early-ish next year, but until that time comes, just watch the first 5 volumes just to get a grip on the story so far, and who the characters are.

Also the humor in the show is mostly child-friend despite the odd, well

    But other than that, yeah.
