No, it takes X% of your raw defense and adds it onto your total defense. However, if your defense is negative and your % defense is negative it will stay negative.

Yeah it's the same. Just in a math format. Supposedly it's how it works now but haven't confirmed in-game myself, yet.

Well, I've never figured The Gambler useful.. But here's the concept: If you have a bad luck and rolls like -130% def bonus on an element, you will have -90 elem. def; and if you have a good luck and rolls -70% on an element you will have 90 elem. def. This ring rarely works with an actual build with other armors having extra elem. def base on themselves as well, so that might be a problem.

get a good roll and you can just slap it on to patch like all of your -elemental defenses
only problem is that you actually need a really good roll, hence the name "the gambler"
