I go back in, watching the man and waiting for the others.

 

You still need to see if he can do magic.

 

Yevor: "Well, you did steal my friend's necklace first."

If you did more interaction, like trying to reach out and touch them or whatever, it may have prompted an encounter

Man: “Forgive me. My name is Professor Elemental. My attic is magical, things that get lost tend to end up there. I did not steal your friend’s necklace, it simply ended up there. But I did help you regain it, I hope.”

He looks at his necklace.
"How did you get lost though?" He murmurs.

he does air quotes when he says lost

 

Yevor: "That message... slightly helped?"
Yevor: "Also, weren't we supposed to give you something?"

Yevor: "For once, I agree with Althaios."
