So I read this book called ‘’Flatland’’ a few days ago, and I really enjoyed it. It’s a book written by the British mathematician Edwin Abbot. My brother once told me about It, he started about a book based around maths, and when I heard that, I was pretty excited to read it, since I quite like maths. It’s a story told by square who lives in Flatland.
The inhabitants of Flatland are all geometrical figures. The number of angles and regularity of a shape of an inhabitant determines their social status. Women, being a straight line, are thus lowliest. Isosceles triangles are servant classes, equilateral triangles are the middle class, squares and pentagons are in the peerage, polygonals are nobility and circles are priests.
The thing in Flatland is, that you can’t see shapes. You could see it likes this, if you put a coin on the table, and you look right above it, it is a circle. But if you keep your head closer to the table, the coin suddenly becomes a oval, and if you keep your head even closer to the table, it should eventually become a straight line. That’s how everyone sees each other in Flatland. You’re now probably asking yourself ‘’how do people recognize each other then?’’. If you want to know the answer of that question, and answers of many more questions you now have, you should really read the book yourself.
I especially suggest the book for people who also love maths, because if you don’t, you might just want to keep maths in maths class.
