Art Random Story Cover

I was really bored, so I decided to make the cover of the Wynn-related story I was going to write.
This is my first time actually making something on Gimp, so be free to criticize it. This is just a rough draft, not the final product.

also, I suck at drawing. It isn't my expertise.

I NEED SOME REALLY GOOD ARTISTS HERE, TO GIVE ME FEEDBACK.

For starters, what am I looking at here? Is it a portal or a guy with purple hair?
For legit advice tho, the font could be better. I don't have any suggestions, sry.

I'm guessing that's the Nether Portal with the spikes and all? I'm not much of an artist myself, but to be frank... it's not usually too good if people can't even guess what it is.
That's okay, though! You're just starting, so like with anything else: practice. There are tons of tutorials on youtube for beginner artists/graphic designers. I also assume you drew that with a mouse. If you don't have a drawing pad, it might be better to draw traditionally and just take a picture or scan it onto your computer, if you can. Good luck!

 

Don't take this the wrong way, but this really just isn't good.

The issues:

I'm all for a simplistic art style, however, the fact that nothing has a texture, yet the portal does, really makes it a lot worse. The portal's outline is also really weird.

It seems you tried to use a one-point perspective, with the portal being in the background, with a bridge(?) leading up to it. This is fine, but it's really hard to tell foreground from background. The spikes at the top of the piece are really weird and shouldn't be visible from a normal perspective unless they're right in front of you and are really small. This makes it seem like it is drawn from a frog perspective (near the ground and looking up). To me it almost looks like the red is the sky (I assume it is the netherrack surrounding you when in the roots of corruption) and you are looking up to the portal, without something surrounding it, which is standing on top of some kind of tower. The red doesn't look like it's part of the environment and looks like it's behind the portal.

Apart from the issues with perspective there are some clear issues with colouring such as with the bridge(?), with there being parts left white. The part in the top left is also really obvious but you've acknowledged that already. There are also some issues with the text. The fonts don't match and the top part looks really poorly made. The "e" and "o", aren't capital letters, yet it seems the "x" and "n" are. The left-bottom part of the "x" isn't long enough either. Now for the bottom part. The font really doesn't fit with a Wynncraft-themed story and the fact that some of the letters go outside the brown area looks weird and bugs me (I can't help it, please).

How you can make it better:

• Have a consistent art style, the portal looks really weird like this.
• Give the red some texture, even a couple of darker spots would help, to make it clear that it isn't behind the portal.
• Work on your composition, the spikes at the top don't make sense and makes it seem like the perspective is lower or the spikes are just orientated weirdly. Don't have the bridge(?) be viewed from atop when the spikes seem to almost be viewed from the bottom (now that I think of it, the top spikes could make sense when it's viewed from atop, but then the portal and lower spikes don't make sense).
• Tidy up your colouring, you're missing a few spots.
• Have lava under the bridge and maybe even have a little bit of sky visible, It'd help emphasise the different layers of the piece.
• Tidy up the text, keep it in the brown part to keep it from looking weird.

Conclusion:

The composition of the piece is quite disorienting, the colouring and general aesthetic of the piece is messy and the text isn't a fitting font and isn't placed properly.

well i was like a guy that just didn't do anything with art and stuff like that.
now im trying and getting better every drawing you already have tips but i should say: learn more tools, test other programms, i asume u use a mouse maybe you should get a dawing tablet and if drawing isn't your thing try doing gfx with 3D models that's what i did before i started drawing.


Ps: i use the wacom intuos art (small) drawing tablet its cheap big enough and feels natural.
