Does drinking a potion require an action or can I just drink it and attack?

 

It typically requires an action. Depending on the situation, I might let it be a Bonus Action

 

I plan to retreat to cover, drink a Health potion and restore HP, then return to the fight.
Scratch that. I'll retreat to a narrow passage, drink a health potion, and throw another handaxe at the beast from within the passage.

 

Regain 2d4+2 hp, and make your attack roll (how many handaxes do you have?)

 

Health potion:
4+3+2=9HP restored

Attack:
15+3STR+3PROF=21
4+3STR=7

I forgot to mention this, but I wanted to switch out the maul for a shield and my warhammer. Would I need to wait until next turn?
