You think just leaving the creature behind you so it can stalk you down and attack you later when you arn't in such a good location is a good idea? Fair enough

What, we're supposed to kill that thing? That fight would be downright boring. Either it gets onto a narrow section and murders us, or it doesn't and we chip it to death with ranged attacks for minimal damage.

You said yourself you were upset that you didn't fight it!

Also, OOC, you know very well I WANTED the fight to be chipping to to death, but you decided to add Nodes of Doom. Remember those guys that make the fight not as you described it?

Considering the Nodes are less powerful than it's normal attacks, they would only be used against enemies in those tight areas. Enemies in the main area would actually fight the beast.

high-key forgot that fall damage had a max

Wait, @Death Knight Paragons don't get hurt by overflow, right? Once it takes enough damage for the thing to happen, the damage stops?

That seems like, frankly, a stupid mechanic. It might cause players to waste major resources on a really big hit only for most of it to get negated due to the paragon dropping to a new health pool.

Oh. I was banking on the fact that no one knew that "the thing" was, or what Paragons were.

I feel like maybe there could be a fix? Like it can overflow to the next health pool, but not further than? Or the remaining damage is cut in half each time it goes to a new health pool?

I do realize how it could be a big problem, ESPECIALLY with an enemy with a lot of tiny health pools; while an enemy with like only 2 health pools, but both are large, doesn't have such a big problem here

Even with a few health pools, it's hard not to imagine a scenario like:

Generic Wizard: "I use my only 7th level spell slot to cast Finger of Death!"
Generic DM: Well, the boss's current health pool had only 5 hp left, so..."

"You deal 5 damage. Phase 2 begins."

Particularly if the DM doesn't give good descriptive indicators of when one of it's health pools is almost depleted.

How about not dealing more than half of the next health pool? This might still be punishing on enemies with many small health pools.

Actually, just half-ing the overflow damage would likely work better.

In general though, please give indicators of when the health pools are getting low.

    Will do

    Yeah

So like the health pool it's on receives full damage. If it overflows to the next one, that only receives 1/2 of the overflow damage. If it still somehow carries over to the third health pool, I'm debating if that would be 1/2 again or 1/4 (which would then continue to 1/8, 1/16, etc. No clue how that much damage would even happen in one hit). Probably 1/2 again. We'll see.

The highest damage I've seen was on reddit. HB rule that 1 gallon of water against a fire elemental would do a certain amount of damage (1d10? 1d6? idk).

End of campaign. Final boss. Some giant af god of fire thing. Actually has a stat block. Made of lava, yeah, it's a fire elemental. Most of the party was dead, fire god thing still at full HP. Druid cast Tsunami. Actually did the math for the amount of water in a Tsunami vs the hp of the fire boss thing. It legit did like over 500 damage in a single turn. Killed the thing.

Reddit comments pointed out that Tsunami has a 1 minute cast time (DM and Player didn't realize that), but Tidal Wave has a 1 action. Did the math for Tidal Wave. Still did enough damage to kill the thing.

    ---

Or maybe they used the normal MM rules for every gallon doing 1 cold damage. IDK.

That said, the creator of the Paragon thing said there might be situations where some overflow could happen, like here. I'd let some of the overflow fall damage hit the next pool or two.

The falling beast comes by again

This time it lands on the bridge part.

(Fall damage is bludgeoning damage, right?)

    Aaaaaand...

Wow, that wasn't as much damage as I was expecting.

It's first health pool is about half dead.

Also, I forgot to mention before. The beast has two rows of five, like, dark bubbles in it's back.
