Got it. I have a level 3 party character and a level 5 character that I can give npcs to. According to Kobold Fight Club, the fight at the end is deadly for a level 3 party (I don't mind NPCs dying, though) and medium for a level 5 one.

Although, the world is going to be shared with a gauntlet I'm making because I'm bored, so if Magnam has a grudge... "You were expecting skeletons, but it was me, Magnam! The skeletons are here too, so have fun with your CR 3.5 encounter."

 

And maybe buff Magnam up into a more powerful statblock, like a Volo's Guide Evoker, and get more followers...

 

Hmm... I could do that...
The Level 3 party is lead by my Cleric, so negotiation could happen.
The Level 5 party is lead by my Rogue, whose first reaction to cultists is to kill them.
Which would be better?

 

I don't know which option is better. According to my notes, Magnam is technically CN, and there are ways to complete the situation peacefully, but if you don't kill him, you won't get the dagger of embers, and Kent will take the situation into his own hands if necessary. Neither solution is necessarily better. However, for the level 5 party, have the fire elemental be already summoned and attack alongside the cult.

 

Or I could start with an extra Mephit, then after a couple of turns the elemental gets summoned and joins the fight...

 

Maybe not have the extra mephit. The addition of the fire elemental and the two cultists who were summoning him already makes it a Deadly encounter.

 

True. I have confidence in my strategic ability, yet I'm already expecting a FPK, even with magic items from the gauntlet.

 

Remember to pay attention to the arena. Things like fires and rocks tend to make decent chokepoints.

 

You all notice that @AlexisPlay's body go limp in the water, no longer in such a fixed position.

Update: The party won, granted we have a dead NPC and one that died buy got revivified. Magnam was pushed into a lava pit in the center of the room after he died to make sure nobody resurrects him.

We probably would've died if everyone wasn't equipped with magic items...

 

Wait, you pushed Magnam into the lava? Would any of your characters use a slightly magical dagger with no drawbacks? Because Magnam had a magic dagger of embers.

They took the dagger first. We pushed his corpse into the lava to prevent resurrection. Just in case. Can't stop True Resurrection, though, but his cult is dead, so he can't really do anything.

Although, Aziraal in general isn't dead, so...

I believe he was healed, but I recommend he stays unconscious until he's out of the water.
