Not everyone in America voted for Trump. In fact more voted for Hillary! Yay democracy! You really can't blame people for living in the same country as a load of idiots. I think the idea that Trump isn't responsible for his actions because he was democratic(ish)ly elected is rather strange...

 

Sure.

 

It's just that due to the American electoral system being slightly broken, Hillary won the popular vote (i.e. more people actually voted for her) yet Trump won overall. That map isn't really relevant to the popular vote. If you're only going to have two candidates, doesn't it make sense that the one with more votes should, uh, win?

 

Depends on the country, in the USA the electoral system makes sense

 

Okay, then why would you have two types of votes (popular and overall)?? (and i dont know if i should belive that since i'm seeing people saying that Trump actually won that too)
And please explain how that map isnt relevant.

So why are people talking about 'Clinton won the popular vote' so much if there is none??

Look up the electoral college, that should explain it. Basically, Americans vote for other people to vote on behalf of their state for the candidate they want to win. It's an old-fashioned, needlessly complicated and undemocratic system.

The popular vote means nothing in terms of who actually wins, but the total number of people voting for each candidate is published, and in the 2016 election was higher for Hillary. This means nothing except that she got more votes, as it's the electoral college who have the actual say in who becomes president.

 

Wow that's pretty unconvenient, why cant it be like 'people vote one canditate or the other' and nothing else?

 

The US is a massive country with the majority of the population living in the big cities, in order to let the minority in small towns and farms to get represented they vote per area, up to this point it makes sense, from there it is weird and stupid

 

Democracy is a flawed system. It also is the best we have at the moment.

The thing is, as soon as you place some sort of "filter" for the candidates, people will be disapointed in your system. Let's say the final duel of the US was decided through the popular vote. What about the people before the primaries that wanted Bernie or Rubio ? What about the first round of the French election when Macron and Le Pen went to the second round with a third of the country behind them both ?

 

And now you have Macron. Hmmmmm
