In Grian's recent thread for recruiting more CT members, someone mentioned that WynnCraft was hard-coded in Minecraft version 1.8. This statement left me (a student of Java and C++) with a number of questions:
    1. Why 1.8?
    2. What do you mean by "Hard-Coded" to a specific version of MC?
    3. Why can't it work with newer versions?
    4. How hard would it be to update the plugins and other important stuff and things to 1.12 (skipping past 1.9 - 1.11)?
4 1/2. How many people are currently working on such an update, if any?
    5. Most importantly, what are we missing out on in terms of potential content by insisting that WynnCraft stays back-compatible all the way to 1.8?

It takes time to update plugins.
Plus if we update to 1.12 you would be able to play only in 1.12+
In 1.8 you can play in 1.8+

Ok, thank you Yuno. I understand that there is a convenience factor for those who still play on other servers that refuse to update past 1.8 (even though it's a simple thing to disable the whole PvP cool down mechanic but that's neither here nor there), but I still feel like Wynn is limiting itself by insisting on being that far back-compatible.

Also, that really only answered my first question :/

It's not really hard-coded for a specific version. However, our version number is 1.8, which allow us to let anyone play from 1.8 to 1.12.
Mojang changed a loooot of things in 1.9, and it makes updating over that version much harder. We want to do it, as it would fix issues like buggy transportation/resource pack/random bugs, but it takes a bit of time and effort. Going from 1.9 to a higher update would be much easier, so this time is really an exception. There's also the fact that an anormally high amount of players are still on 1.8 after all that time, compared to usual.

We tend to stay compatible to as many versions as possible until...
    a) barely anyone plays the older version
    b) we REALLY want/need the new features

People are working on it. We just need to do it right so we don't suddenly cut 50% of our players from playing or introduce many new bugs.
