Ok little headcanon here for that, they're in a lab on the meteor. Perhaps the lab had life support systems? Problem solved! Moving on to the planets, sburb/sgrub was meant to create a new universe. Not kill people. It wouldn't have just killed it's participants. That's just stupid.

 

True, but around the time of Karkat: Mental Breakdown, we can see the trolls, Dave and Rose next to the green sun (Not going to go into the physics of having a sun next to the meteor/trolls and humans and it's gravitational pull from it's mass being triple the size of our universe not sucking them into it and killing them, as well as the fact they'd burn alive (I believe Karkat mentions how it's hot)) and they're on top of one of the meteors building's, not inside the ectobiology lab.

I think it's just that once you get transported to the Medium, you gain the ability to not need to breathe. Though that wouldn't explain how the Gift of Gab works since you need oxygen for the sound to travel through. So perhaps all of the planets are already equipped with a breathable atmosphere? Though I'm not sure how an atmosphere would work with a meteor travelling at light speed.
