This is just for earth
a(30) + b(22) + c(14) + d(8) + e(4) + f(2) - g(10) - h(7) - i(4) - j(2) - k(1) - l(1) = 57
given
a,b,c,d,e,f,g,h,i,j,k,l are all coefficients representing the number of a given powder.
a + b + c <= 1
a+b+c+d+e+f = 4
g + h + i <= 4
g+h+i+j+k+l = 5

This definitely works and I'm pretty sure I ruled out everything else.

You're doing it out of order, you have to find the air powder first.

 

did you basically just guess and check? I see no way to reliably solve it.

 

Here's my work, directly copy and pasted. It probably makes no sense (I can clarify some part if you want, I guess) but hopefully it gives a sketch of how I did it.

Earth powders - on air def are 13, 9, 5, 3, 2, 1 and there are four earth powders

Since no powder special, at most one t4+ earth powder
The maximum -earth def obtainable then is 13+3+3+3=22, so t4 air is the most possible
If t4 air (16 def), possibilities:
T6 earth: 13+1+1+1 (so 13+3.1’s)

So below this line and before the next we’re assuming we have a t4 air and a t6 and 3 t1 earths

Once we have a t5 earth, we must get 7 more negative air def through three earth powders.

Possibilities:
3+3+1 (case 1)
3+2+2 (case 2)

Assume case 1
Positive earth def: t5+t3+t3+t1=40, which is even more than the previous calculation so clearly this is impossible

Assume case 2
Positive earth def: t5+t3+t2+t2=38 which again is obviously impossible

THEREFORE, THE AIR POWDER IS T3 OR LOWER
