    Fandoms.

It used to be a good word.

Please note that before you hate, I don't like FNAF, I hate Dan and Phil, I like undertale but hate parts of the fanbase, but I will be defending all of these fandoms in this thread. If you are going to go and be like "UUUU LIKE FNAF!!?!?!?? U SUCK!!!" please leave this thread right now.

"Oh wow new FNAF game. How long ago was it that FNAF came out? 3 years or something? Yet they're making a new game!?!?. blegh. start the nope train."

^ Stuff like that comment doesn't help us out here.

It seems like nowadays, fandoms are viewed by their awful side, even if it's just a minority, yet it seems to take over the entire idea of that fandom. A small minority of the Undertale fanbase known as "roleplayers" and "comic dubbers" ruined the entire fandom because people said so. It's like people don't even dig deeper into the fandom to find the good people in it, and instead stick to the stereotype that all of this fandom is cancer or something like that.

I don't like FNAF, but that doesn't stop me from defending it here. As a joke, i wanted to see how people on the FNAF forums would react if I said "This game is dead, turn off your device and go outside." What I expected were little kids screaming "U SUCK!!!! U SED FANF SUKS!!! U SHUD DIEEEEE!!!!"

    I was wrong.

What I got were civil and nice answers from mature people explaining why they feel the game is a good game and why people still talk about it. That was what led me to originally make this post.

You see, it made me wonder, "What exactly do people think of when they hear about this fandom? Screaming kids, or mature adults?"
The answer was obvious, and I was sad about it.

I move on. I decide to go to the Undertale forum. Of course, there's gotta be screaming kids here, everyone talks about this fanbase being cancer!

    Once again, I was wrong.

I decided to join the discord of the Undertale forum and believe it or not, they were having civil, friendly conversations. Not screaming roleplayers. It made me even more sad to see that, not only one fandom, but TWO were being hated on for such a small minority of it's fandom. Sure, there's roleplayers and dubbers, but it's the minority!

Thats when I had to make this. I've seen both games hated on MANY times on this forum, yet when you dig deeper you find the fandom's actually very nice. Dan and Phil may have a bunch of 12 year old girls, but if I were to find a forum for them somewhere, what would I see?
If I went on the Roblox forum, what would I see?
If I went on the Club Penguin Rewritten Reddit, what would I see?
Would I see what people stereotype the fanbase as, or something different...?

    TL-DR

After going to two forums whose topics have an apparently cancer fandom, i could not find any evidence of these things being true, and it makes me wonder why people stereotype these fanbases like this....

    thanks,
    oryx

in my opinion, all fandoms are trash. this is because they never bother to take care of riffraff in the slightest, which poisons the well and makes the community much worse.
i'm not talking about "name 3 of their albums" gatekeeping, more like "you're a shitty part of the community and you're making us look bad, fuck off" gatekeeping.
but again, no fandom ever does this, and that's why they're all seen as a joke.
also, once your fandom is seen as a joke, that's it, there's no reversing that. your fandom is seen to have further confirmed the stereotype, and now nobody will ever take you seriously.

Finally. Someone else who understands how I feel when fandoms are automatically called cancer. Not every part of fandoms are bad, people just need to stop stereotyping. I'm honestly sick of things being called cancer in general too. Cancer is a serious disease, it shouldn't be joked about, and it isn't funny when it is.

Like seriously, I used to be in the Undertale fandom not too long ago. I left it because somebody suggested it would be a good idea, so I did. I was somewhat of a roleplayer, sure, but I wasn't a screaming little kid who only cared about Sans. I respected all opinions of the game and its characters, yet people elsewhere from this forum still hated me due to only thinking about the UT fandom's stereotypes. It wasn't fair. But it still isn't why I left the fandom.

So yes, I understand where people can think a fandom is bad, but stereotypes should not be used anyway. Don't judge a book by its cover or what it appears to be on the surface.

Then you know you're wrong. They didn't mean "Let's discuss fandoms," they just said "let's talk fandoms" because they were about to talk about an unexpectedly pleasant experience with fandoms.

That's nice. It doesn't change that talking about fandoms anywhere on the internet, no matter how bad they actually are, will almost always result in a massive flame war. While it seems to not have happened here (yet, anyway), it's just not a good idea to discuss them online, in any scenario. Best to avoid flaming when you can.

So any post containing the word "fandom" should be deleted because it's certain to start a flame war? You realize you're flaming yourself, right?

Deleted, no, discouraged, yes. If you're willing to bring flame upon yourself, then so be it. You can't stop people from talking about fandoms, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't try to avoid it.

As for flaming; if you think this is what constitutes a flame war, then you've been lucky enough not to be in one before. Saying that discussing fandoms often leads to bad shit going down isn't flaming. Explaining that it does isn't flaming. You brought up the topic of deletion, not me. If you're taking "it's not a good idea" as "it should be deleted," that's your own fault.

I took the fact that fandom discussion leads to flame wars into consideration before posting. I've actually been planning this for a few weeks but that is the reason I've delayed it so much. But I made sure to be as nice as possible about it. Now please stop arguing; it just makes you look hypocritical as you were the one who said it leads to flame wars.

Go into different servers and you will see a "civil" discussion on underrate or fnaf

I totally agree with the fact that there are parts of a fanbase that are good, instead of all the toxicity (such as the guy posting this post is part of some sorta gorillaz fanbase). There are those who want to express their support to the game, band, channel or game (such as art, comics, songs, dubs and even animations), yet there are those that make the fanbase seem "cringey" due to stuff like bad art, dubs or "rule 34". Yet they have done no harm, its instead the person judging that the fanbase is bad since its letting bad art in, despite ignoring all the good stuff that 99% of the damn search has.

There are even those in a fanbase that destroy its own fanbase by spreading toxicity, such as those that rant that "oh play this game or be a spawn of Satan himself" or "kys (insert whatever here) is good", which can be the majority or more commonly, the minority. You can see more of this fanbase toxicity in other damn places, lets say other servers, which continue to create a flame war if you mention something you don't like about something. There are one-sided opinion based places that you will get flamed with rage and statements just because you stated an opinion about something, such as saying that "undertake sucks because (insert super intallectal smart paragraph here)", there will be those butthurt people that would come in. Because of this, people will view the fanbase as toxic because of angry 5 year olds saying "OMFG HOW DAR U FOKIN SY THAT OUNDAHTAIL SOOOKS, IM REPORTING A MOD @(insert mod here)!!!!!!1! OONDERTALE IS A BASF GAME U FOKIN IDIOT CAUNT "

Therefore, There are those that destroy their own fanbase, and those that say that the fanbase is bad due to the minority of people that do fanbase rants or cringeworthy shit.

TLDR: everything already mentioned in previous post

Too many people judge the entirety of fandoms by people who happen to be fans of something who hang out in Tumblr, Youtube comments, etc. etc. And yes, it is the vocal majority of a fandom, but the cesspool of a community that can be Tumblr and YT comments can be applied to any media really, not just a certain one. You always want to find the "sweet spot" in fandoms, and luckily for you, many other people also want to find sweet spots to hide from the bad apples of their fanbase, which forms more sweetspots.

For example, I've been in the Homestuck fandom since August, and despite hearing of it's infamy back a few years ago, I've been having a nice time with it. Why? Because I hang out in places that are more mature and comparable to the community here. (and that one thread in the Other Games section)

Don't judge a whole fandom by Youtube comments, because Youtube comments are just shit in general.

Anyways lets hope this doesn't somehow turn into a flamewar
