I would say use the official one (SCAG) or if there's no official, use the latest UA

If this two official sources (Goliath, Aasamir) use the latest, just like with UA. In this case, the Volo's version

Yeah, I think that's the case...

My issue with the SCAG version is that they replaced the extra spells, which were very thematically appropriate and gave it some nice capabilities, with extra languages, which are considerably less helpful. What does that leave it with?

- A situation mobility option that only activates upon spending spell slots and costs a bonus action

- A damaging ability that can be nice, but has very short range, more or less forcing you to go into melee to be most effective

- An incredibly situational weather-controlling ability that's more or less useless when you're not on a boat or in the middle of a hurricane

- The ability to counter a melee hit by dealing damage and pushing the attack away. Pretty good, but sorcerers don't want to be taking melee hits anyway...

- A powerful flight ability that is basically the only reason to pick this subclass at the moment, but doesn't apply until 18th level.

- Two resistances/immunities (depending on level) - decent, I suppose

It just doesn't seem worth it, especially in comparison to things like the Draconic Sorcerer...

Let me read the two real quick

 

I found one of the creators on Sage Advice saying that the bonus spells were removed because they thought it clashed with the idea of the sorcerer class itself. Not sure how good an idea this was, it was rather unpopular with the community.

 

Literally all the SCAG version did was remove the extra spells. The "extra languages" you mention are not extra languages, it's just more info about Primodial.

The mobility thing can be useful for getting away from enemies who got too close, the damage ability is good if you do find yourself in close combat, the weather controlling is a Ribbon as mentioned in the UA, the melee counter is incredibly helpful for if you do end up getting it, the flight is amazing since you can make the whole party fly, and the resistances are useful.

Draconic Sorcerer get increased AC, damage boosts and resistances against a damage type, flight at 14, and something else I forget.

I guess you take storm for the theme or if you are doing a water adventure

Yeah, no other sorcerer subclass gives extra spells. Only Warlocks, Clerics, Paladins, and Land Druids.

I couldn't find the text for the languages thing, I was just going off how someone else had described it. Anyway, it's thematically nice, and I might still use it, but I might have to revise my spell picks a bit. I want to pick things that are thematically appropriate, but at the same time, would rather not sacrifice effectiveness for sentiment. Unfortunately, the lower number of spells known for sorcerers comes back to bite them here.



On a side note, if we ever reach a high enough level, do you plan to ban Wish? It's a little stupidly powerful...

 

No, because a lot of planar curses and stuff need a spell that powerful to remove them. And also, read the fine print.

I'm quite familiar with the fine print. However, it can be used to cast literally any spell, without triggering the negative effect.

It can be used to cast any spell, or do basically anything else. But if you use it for the "anything else" part, you have a 1/3 chance to never be able to cast it again INCLUDING the "cast any spell" part

In my opinion, a spellcaster powerful enough to cast Wish should be able to use it to its full power.
