Can I Get A Quest Item Back If Its Gone?

I was faffing about with my inventory and picked up a quest item (don't exactly remember which but it was an early one and a piece of paper, something letter i think) when i picked it up another item which filled its slot, i then closed the inventory and instead of the paper going back to its place it disappeared and i'm afraid this will really break future quests, anyways i was wondering if it would be possible for a staff member to put a new one in my inventory
