What Causes Spirits To Stay

So, in the magical world of Wynncraft, it's quite clear that spirits exist, and are tied to a living person, which then are somehow released when the person dies. I'm not sure whether all spirits stay in the world or if some go to a higher place. I'd like someone to tell me why the spirits stay.

Here's what confuses me. There's several conflicting dialogues that make me unsure.

In the Quest "Pit of the Dead", it says, when referring to the spirits of those who were executed due to insanity after discovering the portal, that "Their spirits still haunt this grave and infect the minds of people who disturb them", implying that spirits simply stay in the world...

In The Lusuco Library about the Twain brothers, there are two different things that are said. One is that "dark magic existed that allowed spirits to remain bound to the earth and cause havoc". The other is, simply enough, that spirits are just the "departed that have unfinished business in the realm".

There's many more conflicting ones, and I don't even want to get into the whole Death and his realm thing.

The ideas that I noted here are, as I've interpreted at least:
- All Spirits remain in the world and can haunt things as they please
- Spirits can remain bound to earth using dark magic, otherwise they go elsewhere?
- Only the spirits of people who have unfinished business remain in the realm.

Can someone explain to me how it ACTUALLY works, and proof if you have any? Thanks!

Magic, of course.

The four brothers were spirit seekers, and had magical abilities related to spirits. @Mael could even summon them, destroy them, and heal them! Anyways, it all is correlated with a magical trait. The shrine must've had a spell or something on it

 

Spirit's are a tricky business in any sort of theme related to fantasy, and it remains the same for Wynn's lore. I think your ideas are nailed down to the closest explanation possible, without having to delve deep into how they truly work. Also, in the Hallowynn 2016 quest, we all see that spirits do sometimes decide to stay in the mortal realm, and some have to stay because they haven't finished something they were supposed to achieve while they were alive. Maybe they forgot to cancel a magazine subscription?
Jokes aside, spirits come in different forms and all have different stories, most of them related to magic, but personally I don't think there's enough lore based around them to create solid theories. Maybe we'll see more of this in the storyline update?

 

The official reason to my knowledge is (dernic) dark magic Binding the spirits to this world, as stated in the Twain lore. In the Pit of the Dead it's not the same dark magic causing it, but the corruption.

The whole "unfinished business" thing is right from the old ghost stories of why ghosts stay. It's the most common version, so Wynn probs just threw it in.

I think I made s theory on it a while ago, but it could be the unfinished business, dark magic, the thing that happened to bob, the thing that happened to gale, the list goes on...

 

In the Twain lore, it is explained that spirits are bound to the land through the use of dark magic.
Obviously, there are a lot of spirits, and corruption may also be a reason why they've stayed.
If it is solely dark magic, that would depend on how many practitioners there are - if there are more, then there are more spirits trapped in this realm.

 

What the heck are you talking about. I'm asking why spirits stay behind, simply magic is not enough of an answer considering that there are several different circumstances where different reasons are detailed.. Thanks for trying though.

Well I mean, didn't all of their spirits stay around? In Ragni's Library it tells how Chak, Mael, Fier and Ethe all vanished before Bob's eyes in Troms, after his training was completed... And considering that Mael's powers revolved around spirits, he probably bound his own to the world so that he'd never truly be gone. To teach others, perhaps.

I think we can assume, overall, that Spirits are tied to the world via magic, in the many of its forms... Dark magic, magic of corruption, spirit magic (just gonna say this is what Mael has for lack of a better term)... But what about Dullahan? He came back when Gavel started to decay, if I recall correctly. It wasn't until then.. That would either mean that the decay is a magical force (which wouldn't be too far fetched), or that magic isn't the only reason the spirits come back.

 

Decay seems to be some sort of corruption.
Say Gavel is light - good. It is possible that the worm and the... darkness? it carried could have had a different effect (than wynn) in a place of "good."
Wynn is neutral. As far as we know, the nether portal has always been there.
That makes Dern "bad."
I'm using these terms loosely.
What if darkness affects places that are "good" and neutral differently?
Or maybe, just because Wynn and Gavel are different places, the corruption/decay has manifested itself in a different way.

 

IDK. I originally used the fact that Mael's spirit stayed in a theory about him reaching Ohms, but idk

 

I don't even remember any of Ohm's lore.

Ah, yes, I'm remembering now. His lover was Gale, no? And where is the Qira part mentioned? All I remember is that Gale's spirit was still out there

 

I know you didn't make the name but wouldn't a "Golemancer" just be an alchemist?

Please don't say alchemists only make potions, they don't.

 

dark magic is a hell of a drug

 

The whole point of alchemy is turning one thing into another (lead into gold) whereas golemancery is giving life to inanimate objects
