I'm Slightly Confused About Dern

This is the most accurate canon post. As for the outside speculation, it's mainly considered to be a realm in the sense of not being recognized as a province, and considered a province as in it's a large landmass that will be it's own update (probably).

All we know is that it's a dark continent, not even necessarily evil.

 

No evidence behind it, but we should keep an open mind. What if Dern is just part of something much larger?

 

While I do agree that we know nothing about the exact nature of Dern (Beside it being some dark, far off land), I think there are some hints scattered throughout the game that can give us some ideas about the main conflict:
Someone does not want Dern to be revealed.
In the official lore, the first mention of Dern comes from the villagers, though they are extremely secret about it and refuse to talk about it. In the Llevigar Library, someone tore out the pages of the only book known to have any information about Dern. The final clue is when Rensa in the quest Mixed Feelings mentions, "Do you, for example - Know the name of your ultimate enemy? The reason for the war on your land?," indicating that Rensa knows about the Realm Wars and maybe even the so called "Eye." All of this points to that someone (probably from Gavel or whoever had access to the Llevigar Library), does not want the public or the player to know about Dern's existence. Maybe it's to prevent someone from unleashing a great evil, or maybe they don't want people to find out what they are doing...

The Bob lore is actually some of the most interesting stuff out there, in my opinion.

Dern is a province. NPCs say that Dern is a province. However:
Dern might be a realm.
How do we know this?
Well, from the sealed letters (from the Bob lore) we know that Bob went to fight a beast in a "land far away." The beast could not have been CoW, as CoW is not in a land far away. It is speculated that Bob went to Dern.
In the quest Fantastic Voyage, you find yourself on an island known as Gateway Island. On it is a scrap of paper, with the first words of the sealed letters ("Dear Nilrem.."). This means that Bob has been to Gateway Island.
From the Island, you enter a weird dimension full of endermen and obsidian and who knows what else. Upon exiting, you find yourself in the Abandoned Mines. The Mines border Dern.
It is speculated that the realm you enter in FV is actually Dern.
Thus Dern is a province/realm thing.
However, there is no evidence for this. Just circumstantial and speculation. What is far more likely is that Dern is a province. Dern will contain a portal to the realm of Darkness (just as Gavel has a portal to the realm of Light).

we were told by a builder around 2 years ago that dern will be behind almuj, in fantastic voyage you go to a end themed place and pop back out at the abandoned mines.
in game npc's talk/talked about the three (pre gavel when we learned of fruma) and four provinces.
people talk about the land itself as a far away land so its probably not a realm.

 

Well that's just what I think

 

Maybe Dern is a province like Wynn or Gavel except that evil and corruption has overrun the province from a portal or something from the Dark Dimension, like the nether portal in Wynn?

 

Bob's lore is okay. I just find it poorly written at some points.
